Fallen London is something unique in browser-based gaming. Now, Failbetter Games has announced that they are bringing the award winning predecessor to Sunless Sea to iOS devices this year.

The game with its thousands of fans and millions of written words should be a good fit for the mobile gaming market, as the mobile version will be a free to play app with in-app purchases to allow for additional stories, perks, and actions. This is not too different from the original web game, so it likely won't alienate the dedicated fanbase. In addition, the app will support synchronization with players' existing characters and also allow for offline play.
The game is a rare combination of text adventure, and social game with a wide variety of decisions to be made as your character goes through life in an alternative London which has been dragged underground into a fantastic sunless cavern. This London is full of unusual life, dark dealings, and mysteries to be uncovered and explored, all the while also offering the opportunity to hobnob and socialize with the high brow and lowlifes alike. Parties and pubs, spying and sleuthing, double-crosses and desperate souls are all things the player can expect to encounter in Fallen London.
Kennedy has stated that they have made a significant effort to make sure that the game is the most ethical of free to play experiences. By offering a great amount of content for free to new players, and keeping the pace of play appropriate to daily life rather than aggressively pressing players to consume more content and spend, they believe they enhance the experience for players. "We're a creatively-driven company who want to give players exquisite experiences - and respecting our players' time and investment has allowed us to do just that," Kennedy says.
I have recently started playing Fallen London, and it's a charming game. Excellently written and featuring lots of actions to perform, it can be almost overwhelming to a new player. Events that occur as your story unfolds are genuinely interesting, and it can definitely take some fun twists and turns. There is a lot of free content, but you can also get more using the purchasable currency, Nex, or a discoverable currency called Fate, though Fate is being combined with Nex as part of the lead in to the app's release. Less than ten dollars roughly seems to be the rate for a new package of story elements, which seems fair, given how deep and well written the game is. Dedicated players can pay a monthly subscription and receive additional actions and some more story elements, which is certainly a fair price. Failbetter seems to have done very well on their promise to keep things from being exploitative.
The game is engaging though, and the writing will send you into the unique and fantastic world of the now underground London. Walking through dark alleys of rubber men, sipping mushroom wine, and charming the locals in order to learn their most hushed of secrets is a delightful experience, and you'll find yourself wanting to know what happens next as you carve out your role in the world. Being able to do this from your mobile device should mean a lot more chances to interact with the people in Fallen London, while still not feeling intrusive, thanks to the game's thoughtful pacing. Hopefully the move to mobile devices will bring this experience to a wider audience without pushing away the original fanbase. Given how dedicated Failbetter is to their fans, I expect that they'll do well in this regard.
