Games You May Have Overlooked focuses on providing a brief description of games that I found to be unique and innovative, but may not have gained a large audience. Parallax is definitely one such game. A first-person puzzler that features worlds of black and white that overlap to create the game's levels, Parallax charmed me with the unique mechanics and it's interesting visual aesthetic, which definitely make it a top contender for a game that you may have overlooked.
Depending on the level of challenge, a puzzle game can often deter potential players by providing puzzles that are either too easy or too difficult to solve. One of the things that Parallax did so well was to provide challenges that were definitely solvable with the use of moderate logic, but also maintained a good degree of challenge. Solving the puzzles provided that perfect sense of satisfaction that all puzzle games require in order to be successful. To be fair, however, there was a bit of an issue with the slow scaling of difficulty in the game, but it wasn't all that much of a bother during my playthrough.
In terms of its visual aesthetic, Parallax really did a great job stretching the minimalist style to its limits and creating a world void of color that managed to be quite interesting. The amount of contrast between the black and the white makes for some gorgeous scenes, and I found myself enjoying the simplified graphics of Parallax almost as much as I would a more realistic or stylized game.
The core gameplay of Parallax consists of swapping back-and-forth between black and white in order to put yourself in the right spot at the right time. Levels feature various switches and boosters as well as other mechanics that you must make use of in order to solve the puzzles and exit the level. The levels always felt fresh, meaning that there was more than enough variation to keep the game interesting, which definitely made up for the somewhat slow difficulty progression. Solving all 32 levels requires patience, logic, and skill, and the sensation of accomplishment upon completing all of them is second to none.
Parallax was unfortunately a game that many overlooked when it was released back in March. With its unique aesthetic and innovative mechanics, I strongly feel that it is a great addition to any puzzle fan's library. It is currently available on Steam for $9.99, and provides a solid 4-10 hours of gameplay depending on your skill level with puzzlers.
