Learn and understand the key information and you can piece together a solution. Cypher, the upcoming game from Matthew Brown of Hexcells fame, is all about applying rules, for the purest form of puzzle-solving: code-breaking.

Whereas Brown's past games like Hexcells and Squarecells revolved around minimalist approachs to nonogram-style puzzles, Cypher expands beyond abstract challenges into first-person territory, acting as both history lesson on crytography and a collection of trials about those cryptographic techniques. In the halls of this pristine minimalist musuem, your goal is to input passwords into waiting pedestals, using the surrounding information and codes to figure out each one.

From monoalphabetic substitution to the design of the Enigma Machine, Cypher explores a range of code types across its halls of puzzles, promisng a challenge that might just require a pen and paper to solve.

Cypher is slated to release on Steam on February 20th.

The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human is a breathtaking adventure, one that creates striking landscapes out of its pixel artwork. Thriving sea life swims idly alongside the ruins of humanity's ads and skyscrapers, the world returned to a time before big business and Silicon Valley startups. Taking it all in is so wonderfully quiet, as well, allowing players to draw in the environments like a soothing breath of air. Things are just incredibly peaceful down here as the player wanders the waves.

Unless, you know, you want to keep probing deeper. There are countless dangers down under da sea, meaning to mince the player's sub should they not take care. Should those not cause enough trouble, using harpoon-like weapons to fight off bosses with complex moves and weaknesses. It's all quite jarring after moments of peace, but also teaches the player that moments of calm should be embraced and appreciated, as it is unknown how long they'll last.

It's an incredible adventure, so if you missed the PC release and would like to experience a mixture of calm and chaos, go get the console release.

First person melee has gotten its fair share of iterations and styles in games large amd small, from Dead Island to Chivalry. Currently in development for PC, Arthurian Legends' approach to melee is decidedly more 90's, harkening back to the fast-paced action of Witchhaven and Hexen.

Sword, shield, axe, and mace. Holy grenade and throwing dagger. Arthurian Legends provides you with a weath of weapons to slay the forces of evil, leaving blood and guts in your wake. Split into themed chapters akin to Doom or the recent Dusk, you might fight across the kingdom of Albion: forest and swamp, castles where Saxons and evil mages lurk, the caves and cemeteries that undead and skeletons await in the shadows.

Alongside your weapons, Arthurian Legends lets you control the hordes of enemies with magicial power-ups that can freeze foes or unleash lightning storms, as well as special relics to collect and secret areas with hidden items to find.

Ah, to be a dwarf. Living underground with your dwarven pals, doing whatever dwarves do, and not caring about those weird people on the surface. And then, one day, you take a trip up there and everything is a mess. Monsters roam the world. Ruins everywhere. Oh, well. Time to do what dwarves do best: time to rebuild.

In Regions of Ruin, city building meets side-scrolling RPG. Starting with little more than a fireplace, you set out into the world to gather resources, go on quests, and seeking out new residents for you budding settlement.

These fellow dwarves can be rescued from captivity and used as workers, happily mining and chopping and harvesting away so you can upgrade your camp and go out on ever more challenging adventures.

The basic gameplay loop is pretty simple: visit a location, make sure that no enemies are left standing, and then grab everything that isn't bolted down and hightail back to camp. Regions of Ruin's combat mechanics are pretty simple as well, but the game manages to make all of this fun and engaging.

Sure, you can just charge screaming into an enemy camp, wildly hacking at everything that moves - but how about making use of the local shrubbery to sneak up on sentries and chucking a few axes their way instead?

The game keeps adding interesting stuff like this. At the same time, it ramps up the challenge. The first time you meet one of these armor-clad orc chieftains will be pretty memorable... and also quite deadly, I suppose.

It might not look like much at first glance, but Regions of Ruin is quite the time sink. If your idea of a good time is "building a city while also kicking goblin butt," this one's definitely for you.
