You could probably mistake Lienzo's Mulaka for yet another third person action adventure with a fresh and somewhat exotic coat of paint, but oh, how wrong you'd be. This is a game where its themes inform its design in all things big and small.

You're the Sukurúame, a shaman trying to save the Sierra Tarahumara from destruction by mythical forces brought forth by constant conflict. In order to do that, you have to travel the lands and ask four demigods for assistance. With their help and the powers they bestow on you, you can save the Tarahumara people.

This is not just some story, it's based on the actual culture and mythology of the Tarahumara, an indigenous people from Mexico. Lienzo worked closely with them to create Mulaka, and it shows. Sure, when you're off adventuring you'll be fighting giant beasts and exploring the Sierra, but in its quieter moments, the game paints a portrait of everyday life, steeped in peaceful rituals and oral tradition. All of this is portrayed in a colorful, low poly look which is simply a joy to behold.

By helping other people you earn "Kórima, the sierra's thankfulness, the positive energy created by good deeds," which lets you upgrade some of your skills. Health is restored by collecting plants and (automatically) crafting potions. You are literally living off the land and being a paragon of virtue, and all of this is integrated naturally into the game, without any gamey features sticking out too much.

The controls are not always up to the task of handling combat situations well. There's no lock-on funtion, and taking on lots of creatures at once can feel a little challenging at times. It's here that the game cannot quite measure up to the polish of more expensive productions, but at the end of the day, this is just a matter of getting used to its quirks and adapting.

Overall, Mulaka is an absolute joy to play and it manages the difficult task of conveying culture and mythology effortlessly. Are games the right medium to preserve culture? Probably not - or at least not this way - but Lienzo have created something special here, nevertheless.

There tends not to be much room for story while players are dodging hails of bullets during shmups, but developer Jennifer Raye is trying to change that with Imperishable Memories, a bullet hell shooter that tells a story of a being coming to terms with their past mistakes and learning to move on as best they can.

Atherus is a world created by Roy's memories and creative expressions, and is a place that Thanatos, one of his most foul creations, has taken over. These memory beings and creations are all built, visually, to capture that feeling of looking back at high/middle school art most of us have created ages ago, taking us back to a past with some fond memories and laughter. However, the longer one lingers in these memories, the more they may remember the ugliness that birthed some of these creations and times, something the developer wishes to explore with Imperishable Memories.

This story is told through cutscenes, but also through the game's shmup play, which will have players exchanging shots with various flying enemies. However, players can also grab an enemy and toss them at others, using this close-range attack to rack up ridiculous high scores.

Thoughtful and exciting in equal measures, Imperishable Memories promises a special shmup experience upon its release.

Poor Mike is in trouble after taking a detour through that asteroid field. Even worse, his spaceship place is a literal death trap and he's also being chased by some weird demonic eye demon. It is time to escape - and to supposedly die a whole lot of times in the process.

When Psydra games, creators of twisted RPG Dark Scavenger (2012), take on the platformer genre, you just know that this won't be your run-of-the-mill jump and run. And indeed, Mike Dies feels more like a metroidvania, with short, challenging levels which are interconnected and that you may have to revisit at a later time.

Much like in Terry Cavanagh's VVVVVV, there's a distinct sense of place to Mike's spaceship. You're not just stumbling through a haphazardly put together string of nasty levels. Instead, this place is full of dead ends, secrets, and hidden pathways to discover. It might not look like it, but there's rhyme and reason to all of this torture - and an odd story to boot.

Your set of moves is fairly limited. Running, jumping, and hovering in place are your only means of survival, and the biggest danger in the early levels is not getting part of you teleported away (while the other parts stays where you are, yikes).

But no worries, this limited moveset doesn't grow stale anytime soon. Mike Dies is designed quite well and has some surprises up its sleeve. Meanwhile, you cannot shake the feeling that someone's playing a rather cruel little game with you, but that's for you to figure out...
