Hari beganti bulan betipan megai danji
Besumpah tua ngibun pangan dataika lesi
Sanggup mih aku nyuluk bulan ke dara
Nadai penimpang nempa serega di dunya
Biar ku biar aku nyenggai pengerindu
Labuh ai mata aku sinu
Diara dipendam pengerindu
Biar ku biar ngulit seumur idup ku
Nadai burung nyerumba belagu
Remang terang nyau bebali petang
Diumbuk sabak lemai hari Penatai diri enda agi dianti
Biar mih aku pegi, aku pegi

Board games are magical. All those bits and bobs to move around and tinker with, the pleasure of interacting with other people, all focusing on a specific set of rules ... this is pretty special and hard to translate into another medium. Thankfully, games like Antihero prove that it's not impossible.
There are quite a few board games adaptations out there, but pretty often, something gets lost when they make the jump to the big or small screen. Most digital ports of actual board games just don't feel right without physical components, without little plastic dudes you can move around the board.
Conversely, there are digital board games that wouldn't ever work in physical form because of their complexity and the amount of micromanagement required to keep things moving forward. The best of both worlds, a board game that would work flawlessly both on- and off-screen, that's pretty rare. Thankfully, there's Antihero.
Under cover of night, you control the Fate of a Victorian-era master thief, gaining coveted victory points by means of lies, deception, and other trickery. Our protagonist has several actions available each round. Explore the city streets, which are hidden beneath a thick fog, rob some houses or attack your opponents pawns. Through well-considered spending of various resources you can unlock further talents, such as more actions per round, more loot, or higher attack damage.
Of course you can also use your gold to recruit other units. Glowering ruffians can block the streets and prevent my opponent from plundering my territory. Or maybe you invest your money in some street urchins who squat in resource-generating buildings. One urchin loitering in front of the bank will panhandle some extra gold each turn. Another has taken up position in front of the orphanage, where he lowers the cost of recruiting more of those naughty little louts. And a church filled with those brats gets you the best resource of all, lanterns. You can buy the best improvements with those - or even bribe your way towards victory.
All of this is incredibly charming and clearly evokes some sort of Dickens-ish scenario. Antihero also has clear, concise rules which are reminscent of „real" board games. Once you have learned those, you can focus on the game and work out some strategies. Of course, there are always situations where your opponent thwarts your carefully-hatched long term planning and short-term threats need to be eliminated.
In other words: playing Antihero feels like a proper board game session with friends, featuring incredulous laughter and loud cursing. And there it is, the magic, this fleeting, special thing that many board game conversions lack. Antihero has it in spades.
The game features an extensive single player mode and, of course, offers hot seat or online play against real opponents. Unsurprisingly, developer Tim Conkling has played around with the thought of turning this into a physical board game - however, there are no concrete plans or anything like that yet, so we have to make do with the PC and mobile versions.
You can purchase Antihero on GOG and Steam for $14.99. Android and iOS versions are also available. For more information, visit the game's website or follow developer Tim Conkling on Twitter.

Four years after its initial reveal, Ecuadorian developer Freaky Creations is bringing their hand-painted and challenging plaformer To Leave to PS4 later this month.
As Harm, your way forward is fraught with danger - blocks of all kind, crushers, and others - and your only companion through these challenges is a helpful door that allows you to rapidly ascend. Graceful arcs and careful descents are your keys to survival, especially when a single hit can send you back to the last checkpoint.
Contextualizing the hazard evasion is a narrative infused with Ecuadorian culture and the personal experiences of the developers. Our 2014 interview goes into greater detail on the game's narrative foundation, but on its own, To Leave looks to be a challenging blend of punishing gameplay and symbolic narrative.
To Live can currently be preordered on the Playstation Store ahead of its April 24th release. To find more details on To Leave and its development, you can visit the game's site here for bother resources.

Long Gone Days is an RPG about military combat, to be sure, but someone's abilities in a fight aren't just created and used in a vacuum. The developers wish for players to bond with their fellow combatants and fighting civilians, helping keep up friendships, relationships, and morale if they have any hope of surviving against the game's tough foes.
Rourke, a capable soldier, may have sought to flee war after witnessing the consequences of one of his missions, but soon finds himself dragged back into combat to help keep the battle from spreading any farther. This will mean having to put his skills back to work, taking the player on a journey through Rourke's conflicting emotions as he once again returns to combat despite wanting nothing more than to escape it.
Fighting isn't the biggest part of the game (although complex body part targeting and mandatory, challenging battles with multiple approaches ensure it is still filled with deep systems), as connecting with the people caught up in these events is far more important. Players will need to find interpreters to get to know the locals when they don't speak the language, take time to get to know the people fighting alongside them through dialogue, and then know how to help them, emotionally, when the horrors of war freeze them in their tracks. Much of the game will be spent learning about the people with you, learning about the psychological side of warfare, as well as the importance of companionship in combat, more than how well one can pick out where to place a shot.
Long Gone Days is available (in an Early Access state) for $14.99 on Itch.io, Humble Bundle, and Steam. For more information on the game and developer Bura, you can head to the game's site or follow them on Tumblr, YouTube, and Twitter.

Smaex's ONE is a short game about escaping some caves - but you only have one life and one bullet in your gun.
Thankfully, this sounds worse than it actually is. You can recall the bullet you shot, so it zips right back into your barrel, ready to be fired again. It also ricochets from walls, allowing you to clear out narrow corridors with ease. Using the level layout to your advantage in the fight against bats and slimes is pretty fun, but do be careful - there are some nasty surprises waiting for you.
Made for the Heart Jam 2018, ONE feels a bit like a prototype, but developer Smaex has already started to work on more levels. It's a simple idea that works really well, and I'm eager to see if this simple concept can carry a full game.
You can download ONE from itch.io for free. For more information, follow Smaex on Twitter.

You just have to live to tell the tale, and some presences don't aim to make that easy as players wander.
Fans of The Last Door may jump at Ellen with a single glance at the art style and themes. Ellen features a minimalistic pixel art style that can make some truly terrifying creatures come to life. To help drive the atmosphere, the game also places a heavy emphasis on music and sound, creating some truly bone-chilling effects that will leave the player nervously laughing while mentally reassuring themselves that "This isn't scary!".

Beckett is a detective game about a missing persons investigator on the lookout for someone who's suffering from a "reality-altering illness". This will lead the detective, Beckett, into a world where reality is falling apart and life is consumed by the surreal, forcing players to grasp at meaning and imagination to fill in the gaps in this unsettling, yet compelling, journey.
Players will work through the narration of the game's storyline, forcing players to reconstruct events from the fragments, visions, and interactions they find within Beckett's world. As they do so, a story may emerge in their own minds, making them take part in the quagmire of reality that the game offers, leaving a part of themselves in the narrative along the way. It is the player's take on the meaning of events, shaped by their own lives mingling with that of the game itself, that shape it, after all, the two shifting as they move in tandem.
Beckett is designed to respond to how you interact with it, drawing the player into its absurdist nightmare, pulling them ever forward through their curiosity. It's an intriguing game that pulls the participant in through their curiosity, but what secrets and meanings will you find that are specific to you? As you play Beckett, what will it play back through your presence within it?

At face value, Parsnip features animal friends and a bunny protagonist on a quest for cake, looking for ingredients to make their tasty treat. Something doesn't seem quite right about the seemingly-cheery world, though. If you're ready to take a dive on something suspiciously cute, try out Parsnip and see what that little bunny is cooking up... Don't let your guard down upon seeing the child-friendly, hand-drawn animation. Pushing such overtly positive tones, Parsnip knows how to get under players' skin while keeping them feeling like they may be overexaggerating their fear. Play as Parsnip and walk through the forest to collect ingredients from the neighbors, whether it be an alcoholic artist or a boarded up shut-in. Normal stuff for cute bunnies, right? As players meet an array of adorable characters with...discomforting aspects to them, players may be wondering if they are in for some light-hearted fun and humour. They'll just have to work through the adventure to see, though! If you want to feel uneasy while baking a cake, check out Parsnip and hopefully make it out in one piece. You can get Parsnip on Itch.io here! You can also check out the developer's itch.io page!
