Stranded on a foreign island, Eirik and his family have to build a settlement from scratch, fend off bad guys, and just try to survive from one day to the next. That last part is actually the hardest, since hunger, dehydration, sleep deprivation, and depression are much more fearsome adversaries than the occasional raider.

Dead in Vinland is, at its very core, a management game, wrapped up in a well-done Nordic narrative and garnished with some turn-based combat that has the tactical depth of Darkest Dungeon. I half-expected to not like it due to its heavy reliance on micromanagement, but it turns out that I cannot help but adore this game.

You start with your family of four, driven from their homes by invading Vikings and stranded on unknown shores. Each day is divided into three phases, two of which can be spent on various activities and the last one for relaxation, nourishment, and sharing stories around the camp fire. During the day, you delegate activities, such as exploring the island, gathering resources or food, or developing new activities.

In order to survive, you need to balance all these things - otherwise you'll starve to death, die of thirst or sheer exhaustion, or succumb to despair. Each one of your characters has different traits and stats which make them more suitable for specific tasks - but sometimes you'll just have to improvise to make ends meet.

The thing is: you're always on the brink of annihilation and way too often saved by some narrow escape or windfall. It's death by atrition if you don't play it right, and it certainly feels that way. Despair is the name of this game and every new day without bad news feels like a gift.

vinland2.jpg

Thankfully, your little camp will grow, with additional characters joining your settlement and adding their talents to your ragged group of survivors. Of course, this also means that you'll have more mouths to feed... And then there's the "ruler" of the island - and he demands a tribute.

Dead in Vinland is a game of thriving against all odds, of despair and hope, and it completely got me under its spell. While I'm constantly tempted to restart on a more forgiving difficulty, I just cannot abandon these people. Not as long as everyone is alive - which seems less likely with every passing day. The game's presentation is lovely as well - the slow and sad, almost dirge-like music in particular is quite wonderful.

Dead In Vinland will be released tomorrow on GOG, Steam, and Origin for $19.99. For more information, visit the game's website and follow developer CCCP on Twitter.

In Whale Rock Games' co-op shooter Deployment, future wars between governments and megacorps have escalated into digital conflicts, within the procedural battlefields of servers.

In this cyberpunk action game, bots created from information data battle the encroaching forces of megacorps, in a ceaseless virtual war to control data. Working with a friend online or fighting AI in single player, you choose between several "infobot" classes - the aggressive Gunner, the damage-absorbing Pyro - and enter hectic dual-stick combat against waves of enemies.

Survival means quick reflex, precise aim, customizing your attack style through skills and perks for each class, and capturing powerful turrets within rooms to turn the tides against your relentless enemy.

Deployment is available for $12.99 on Steam.

PlugMe_Screenshot08.png

Plug Me is a platformer with a strict timer on it, forcing players to navigate its cute world in a hurry if they wish to keep the city of Plug Me from tumbling down from the skies. However, the timer they're trying to stay ahead of is also a physical object in the world that the players will need in order to hop over obstacles or make certain jumps, so players will really need to make sure their timing is down if they hope to succeed.

Plug Me presents players with a variety of stages to jump through, dodging spiked traps, pits, and other troublemakers who make life difficult for Plugman. While leaping around will be key to surviving all of these, the player will need to be mindful of the physical timer that runs through each level. Once this bar runs out, the player will lose, but the bar might also be covering up spikes, be in the way of certain jumping areas, or be needed in order to clear a spot with a leap. This means that players will need to keep a close eye on it in order to see if it is in the right place when you need it, out of the way when you don't, or whether it's draining too fast to win.

Plug Me's developers did realize they might be putting players through a lot in having to survive when even the timer is against them, so there are some mechanics that will keep players from losing their temper after repeat losses. The game will let players remove a single obstacle with the help of Evinrude should they die too much, and if they die a whole lot, the game will also slow down how fast the timer drains in order to keep play fair for players who might otherwise be getting mad.

So, if you can make good use of your time, Plug Me might be the puzzle game for you.

Plug Me is available for $2.99 on Steam. For more information on the game and developer Havana24, you can head to the developer's site or follow them on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.

badlandsroadtrip.jpg
BadLands RoadTrip is almost comically ambitious with its "open world action adventure with co-op multiplayer where the player builds their own gun and goes on a quest to rid the world of the robot apocalypse." As expected, this doesn't always work - there is a reason why open world titles are usually tackled by larger studios, not single developers. However, the game has one standout feature I'd love to see a lot more of all across the AAA and indie space.

You see, the reward for blasting those robots to smithereens is money, which in turn allows you to customize your guns to your heart's content. This goes way deeper than just cosmetic options: in addition to adding different components such as barrels and firing mechanisms to your weapon, you also craft the bullets it uses. Here, you can set the amount of shell, propellant, rocket fuel, and explosives, leading to all sorts of weapons that not only look, but handle differently.

This is well done and keeps you invested in your little arsenal... even if the rest of the game is probably hit-and-miss for most players. You might find the humor either refreshing and quirky or obnoxious, and the open world doesn't have very much to do besides traveling to the next quest hub and shooting lots of robots. There are also technical issues that bring down the frame rate to single digits occasionally.

badlandsroadtrip2.jpg
I did like the small physics puzzles where you had to shoot through some tubes in order to unlock new weapon parts. Very clever, that! Also, there's a nice sense of escalation, with the enemies getting progressively stronger and your own weapons turning ever more ridiculous.

Sure, BadLands RoadTrip has a few issues, but if the humor works for you, you should probably give it a shot, if only for the pleasure of turning your lousy old pea shooter into a four-barreled semi-automatic revolver that shoots exploding rubber balls.

You can purchase BadLands RoadTrip from Steam for $9.99. For more information, visit the game's website and follow developer Oswald de Bruin on Twitter.

duckJam_header.png

Dating sims, dodging traffic, and snatching up some bread - no task is too small for a group of ducks in need of some funds. If you're game to help these fowl raise funds with fast-paced mini-games that want to bring a little laughter to your life, try out Duck Jam.

In Duck Jam, some fowl are in the unfortunate scenario of being in a band with broken instruments and no funds to repair them. With your help, these ducks will be quick to get back to jamming, but only if you're good at rapid tasks. For example, you may have to suddenly lay on the charm and flirt with a duck to fulfill your job, or simply float around on the water and collect bread crumbs. Or you could be in charge of diffusing a bomb. Basic duck stuff, right?

The fun doesn't stop in this one-after-the-other mini-game slinging experience, so grab a chair and try not to go quackers.

You can check out Duck Jam on Itch.io here. You can also follow the developers BOON, Zen00, PixelDough, and Thimz on their Twitter accounts!

A pair of schoolmates find themselves in a colorful world of danger and magical crystals in Umiro, a game where players must guide the two characters at the same time as they work to collect items and find the exit from this surreal dimension.

Umiro's labyrinths are each filled with colored crystals for players to collect, as well as hazards floating around the striking landscapes. As they must guide both characters at the same time, players must carefully plan the routes they intend the pair to move through lest one of them get clobbered. Should they do a good job at keeping them intact, they'll learn more about why they've ended up in this place, unveiling more memories as they delve through the game's forty stages.

If players wish to further challenge themselves with more danger, they can go for the yellow crystals, which will reveal more information about the dimension, but also require travelling down decidedly more lethal routes. Either way, it will be a challenge to figure out how to best guide these two in their journey, offering a relaxing, but thoughtful, walk through a bright alternate dimension.

Umiro is available for $2.99 on the App Store, Google Play, and Steam. For more information on the game and developer Diceroll Studios, you can head to the developer's site or follow them on Tumblr and Twitter.

A world of mismatched platforms lies ahead of players in Brutalism, a game where players must shift the whole world, and the platforms that fill it, in order to safely make it to the end of each puzzling area.

Brutalism's nineteen worlds are all made up of individual rods that move up and down when the player wills them to, allowing them to find a way through a maze of shimmering obelisks. However, many of these objects are at varied heights, so players will need to examine how the entire area around them shifts as they move the obelisks around, making sure they have cleared a route for themselves and aren't getting lost in a maze. Brutalism does offer some tools that let players watch the entire area, though, so they ought to be able to find their way out.

Just don't lose your footing while watching the movement patterns of this electronic world, though. Even if you seem to be in control of the world, it can be a long fall.

Brutalism is available for $4.99 on Steam. For more information on the game and developer Stroboskop, you can head to the developer's site or follow them on YouTube and Twitter.
