While Golden Hour is immediately eye-catching with its high-resolution 2D graphics, the piece of this upcoming metroidvania that hooked me was the unique story being presented. Sure, I like the idea of using the destructible environment to my advantage, but one can't underestimate the value of a yarn well-spun.
Golden Hour is set in a world on the edge of war. The four provinces are on the brink of a total blowout and, thanks to an interesting twist, the game's four main characters are thrust together by fate and granted a vision of destruction -- both in terms of the world around them and each in a more personal element as well. This provides strong reason to band together and stop the impending conflict between their respective factions. It's possibly the most interesting setup to a metroidvania game in some time.
Of course, the game itself is interesting as well. One of the biggest selling points is the ability to use the environment itself as an asset. You can shoot a chandelier down from the ceiling to take out enemies beneath it, for example. Fragile walls can be razed by detonating explosives. It even appears that boss battles will have some element of needing to use the level in order to succeed.
While there are four central characters to the plot, the story mode puts you in the shoes of just one of them. As you play through you'll be able to level up your character's abilities and skills as you see fit. The other characters will aid you during larger battles. Also, since the story branches, they may take care of quests you can't due to the path you've taken. This means you can make different choices on subsequent playthroughs and see different levels. The other three characters are playable in the game's Challenge Mode, where players must defend an area from waves of monsters.
You can check out Golden Hour on the game's Kickstarter page. It's already confirmed for a Steam release on Windows. Mac and Linux ports are possible depending on funding, as are ports to other systems as well. November 2015 is the estimated release date.
