I don't know what it is, but it's always really exciting to see innovation in the SHMUP genre. The stunning Red Cobra is one of the newest games to enter the crowdfunding ring, and it's bringing elements of twin-stick shooting and metroidvania exploration with it.
Players can fire their weapon in any direction which is a huge departure for a genre that usually fires in one direction. While it's not the first game to make use of this mechanic, it's a welcome change from established conventions.
The metroidvania exploration is the bigger deal. Players will be able to change their path through the game world in open levels that are "sprinkled throughout" it. There are also gigantic bosses to conquer, and they aren't simple bullet sponges. These fights are mixed with puzzle elements, meaning victory will come if the player is clever enough to take them down.
The Kickstarter page lists May 2016 as the targeted release date on Windows and Mac, with other platforms under consideration. Adversary has also put the game up on Steam Greenlight.
