Halloween party ideas 2015

ducksoup01.png Although the graphics and the animation on the game's page are trying to suggest otherwise, Ducksoup Dungeon isn't actually come out for Game Boy. Instead, it's another 7DRL entry developed by Ducksoup Games in just one week. More specifically, it's an action platformer roguelike of fine quality. Which on top of offering unlimited procedurally generated levels to beat, comes also with a simple progression system so that playing doesn't feel completely pointless beside trying to go as far as possible. Jam games aren't often featured with sub-goals, and it's important that you keep this in mind if you feel like judging upfront.

Combat as well as moving efficiently through the levels definitely requires some getting used to. In fact, to avoid being stopped by faulty dungeon generations, you can jump mid-air infinitely almost as if you could fly. Moreover, in regards to serving killing blows left and right, you need to learn first how to direct your attacks with the arrow keys before even pretending to do well.

In every session you must keep track of three things, essentially. Your HP, the experience bar, and the gold acquired (at least until it's useful). Obviously, if your HP drop to zero you die and you're sent back to the main menu. But to avoid any coward behavior even when you're badly injured, the only way to fully recover is to keep fighting in the hopes of leveling up before getting smashed by some foul creature. Gold coins, at last, are what you use to unlock three other characters. They're unique in every way, but that, doesn't exactly imply that they're more powerful than your default Slashchicken. Both Rollerpig and Swarmbug don't even have a proper weapon, and controlling Ratbone's boomerang is insanely difficult.

ducksoup02.png Just like the heroes at your disposal, even the enemies vary quite a lot. Skeletons and slimes are your average weak opponents that live in the first five floors. Though as you delve deeper in the dark dungeon, bats, and especially necromancers, will give you definitely a harder time. I managed to go reasonably far given how difficult every level becomes after about the tenth. However, even then I couldn't spot any sign of an imminent boss fight. Perhaps Ducksoup Dungeon is really endless.

Bear in mind that the generation script isn't 100% reliable and occasional bugs may occur. So if you think this is a risk you're fine with taking, the game can be played on your browser of choice over here.
