We've all experienced the crushing defeat of being in possession of a computer irreparably infected by malware. It only takes one interesting advertisement to bait us into clicking and allowing the infectious material onto our hard drives. While almost all computer users are aware of the risks of malware, few ever wonder exactly what happens when our computers are infected, and how it can be purged from our system. These questions are the basis for Exception, which focuses on freeing the computer from malware, and liberating it from an evil being that is bent on destroying your system.
Platformers are one of the most popular genres among gamers, and have been the host for thousands of great games over the years. One issue with the genre, however, is that many of them often feature such similar mechanics that it is difficult to find enjoyment or to differentiate between games. The platforming genre as a whole is one of the most difficult to create a successful game in, and only those games that possess the most innovative design will be able to stand out among the ever-increasing crowd.
Exception takes the standard mechanics of a platformer and adds a unique twist. As you progress in the levels, they have the ability to transform in various ways without much notice, meaning that you can easily find yourself upside-down in a matter of seconds and have to adjust to the new perspective. The levels feature the ability to twist, flip and rotate, and make liberal use of these transformations in order to provide a continuous challenge to the player.
The standard gameplay loop consists of battling enemies and avoiding obstacles as you find yourself moving through the levels at high speeds. These enemies react quickly to the changes in the levels orientation, and make use of intelligent A.I. systems in order to alter their techniques to provide a constantly-changing challenge for the player. With the combination of the level transformation and the intelligent enemies, we can expect an entertaining and difficult platforming experience from Exception.
The inspiration behind the game comes from the simple and entertaining ideals of retro NES games. Many players appreciate a game that is simple to learn, yet difficult to beat, and Exception is the...exception to modern games that attempt to drown the player in menus, controls, and tutorials. Exception strives to become a rich experience that revolves around having a simplified control system and strong level design. Complex mechanics do not necessarily make for a great game, and this is definitely a game that looks to be providing more entertainment with less controls.
Exception is targeting a late 2015 release date, and plans to ship with 128 unique and challenging levels, as well as a new game plus mode. It is currently seeking approval through Steam Greenlight.
