Often when describing a game, the easiest way to do so is to make a comparison to a game that is already in existence. Imagine trying to define a word without being able to use any synonyms of the word itself. This feeling is replicated perfectly when trying to describe OBEY. Simply put, OBEY is a mutiplayer game in which players take control of cute little bunnies who attempt to control and manipulate their peers by gaining control of the robot on the map. However, OBEY is much more than that. It is a game about deception, both inside and outside of the robot, and creates an environment in which the most clever and manipulative players thrive.

Without actually playing a match of OBEY, it is almost impossible to fully understand how the game works. No matter how much gameplay you watch, or how many conversations with players you have, there is no match for the experience gained while playing. The goal of each match is to reach the server-set cash limit, which is typically 10,000 cents. Money is earned by bunnies at a constant rate, but the bunny in the robot earns extra, making it a position that everyone would like to be in. In order to earn a greater amount of money, the robot will purchase items such as uranium, missles, sensors, and laser walls, which all arrive inside of a dropship that appears every minute or so. These items will then drop in a designated drop zone, which is different on each map, and the bunnies will have to move the items into the feed box in order to give them to the robot. While this sounds like a lose-lose situation, the robot can set the box to automatically pay the bunnies for their efforts, which makes it worthwhile to bring the goods to the robot.

Being an obedient bunny in OBEY almost never pays off. It's very rare that you'll see a bunny who has been obeying the entire time get the win. There is a perfect balance somewhere between obeying and attempting to subvert in order to take control of the robot. This mechanic allows a bunny to sneak their way up to the robot and go in the door at the base in order to take control and kick out the other player. However, the robot has many ways of defending against overthrow attempts, which include a flamethrower, a machine gun, and a set of sensors that can be activated to zap any nearby bunnies. These sensors are powered by batteries which must be purchased and delivered, which means that the bunnies have control over how many, if any, batteries they would like the robot to possess in a given match.

After a bunny is killed, be it by flame, explosion, or machine gun, it is then respawned on the dropship. Once on the dropship, a timer will be visible that lets the bunny know how much time until the ship returns to the map and releases all of the items and bunnies it contains. If this timer is above 30 seconds, there is a chance that it can be crashed, which is accomplished through the bunny purchasing goods and placing them behind a dotted line in the rear of the ship. Doing so provides a percentage chance to crash, which is displayed inside of the ship. Once the timer reaches 30 seconds, the ship will decide whether or not it crashes based on this percentage. If it does crash, the location of the "accident" will be random and will create a fiery explosion of goods and bunnies wherever it lands. Crashing the ship means that the robot must purchase another one if he or she would like to continue purchasing goods. Also, having no dropship means that each bunny killed will spawn in a random location on the map, meaning that it will be all the more difficult to keep up with their positions at any given time.

While there are a lot of mechanics to learn and understand in OBEY, it is surprising how quickly new players pick up all of the necessary information. OBEY is definitely the type of game that is easy to learn, yet difficult to master. New strategies are created each and every day. While some players enjoy playing a more dominant robot, others enjoy paying their bunnies extra for obedience and being a benevolent leader. The charm of the game lies in the fact that each match is so different depending on the players you interact with, because everyone has their own personalities which dramatically alter the way the game is played. OBEY is not so much a game about mechanics, it is a game about player interaction, and this is its driving force. The variation from match-to-match along with the unique design make it one of the most entertaining and innovative multiplayer experiences on the market. The final piece of news concerning OBEY is that there is a map-creation tournament running this week (week of 5/10/15) that will end this Friday (5/15/15) around 8 pm EST. The tournament challenges players to create their own maps using the extremely simple tools. To find more information about map creation in OBEY, check the wiki. The rules of the tournament are that each map should be created no earlier than 5/10, and cannot have been tested publicly before submission. This means no running your own server and having other players test out the map before you submit. On Friday, all of the map designers who enter will play a round on each map, with each designer having 3 votes to give after all of the maps have been played. OBEY is a game that is centered around its community, and this map tournament will allow designers to interact and provide valuable feedback as well as award the winner with a free copy of Dead Space 3.
