Halloween party ideas 2015

When it comes to games that are largely focused on multiplayer matches, I always find myself worrying about the longevity of titles. Having a successful multiplayer game relies heavily on creating a tight-knit community that will keep coming back to play more of the game and keep the servers alive. Bierzerkers currently suffers from an unfortunate lack of players, but with the game's fun and lighthearted Nordic themes and entertaining, yet accessible, combat, I predict that the community will only continue to grow as the game nears a full release. I've played a few hours of Bierzerkers now, and it's time to offer my early impressions on this early access title.

Bierzerkers is a multiplayer melee combat game that is set in a Nordic realm known as Brewhalla. Right from the get-go, you can see that the game doesn't take itself seriously at all, which is one of my favorite qualities for a game to have. While it's always nice to have games that tackle serious social issues, or that tell epic stories, sometimes I just want to sit down and play something dumb and brainless for a while and have some simple fun.

With matches that are based on working as a team, you'll often find the same frustrations as in other multiplayer games. Teammates who aren't playing the objective, afk players, and the other usual annoyances. This, however, is not at all the game's fault, and to the game's credit, it even remains entertaining during those times. Your typical match will have you fighting against the enemy team in a 5v5 battle to capture and hold objectives.

My first issue with Bierzerkers would be its map design. I found the maps that are available to be terribly small, which didn't leave much room to move around and flank enemies. While this design may have been deliberate, I feel that it would be a lot more fun if there was just a larger area to explore and fight in. These small maps create vicious chokepoints where all of the fighting takes place, which makes matches predictable and causes them to become quite bland after a while.

Before you enter a match, you are giving the ability to choose your class. My personal favorite is the Drunkard, who functions much like a support character. He has healing abilities which can keep his teammates alive, and can also defend himself with his ridiculously huge hammer. Other classes include the Raider, who is a more versatile fighter who can tank and deal damage, and the Scoundrel, who is a rogue-type character. The Scoundrel, in its current state, seems to be the favorite and most powerful class. Every time I faced a Scoundrel, I found myself having trouble taking them down. With the ability to blink out of sight, even out of stuns from what I saw, it's almost impossible to pin them down and take them out.

One thing I really liked about Bierzerkers is its art style. I found it to be simple, yet attractive. The environments were nice and colorful, which is always a welcome change from some of the more bland environments we typically see in games. Proper use of color gives the game a nice lighthearted feel, and just makes it a great game to play when you're just looking to have a quick bit of fun.

Since Bierzerkers is in the very early stages of its Early Access run, we can expect a lot more content down the road. The addition of more characters to play, more customization options, more game modes, and additional maps will make the game a lot more fun to play. In its current state, Bierzerkers is a bit difficult to recommend. Although I really enjoyed my time with the game, I had to set up a match with friends in order to get in a lobby with more than 2 human players. Buying into the game now does get you a better price, and will allow you to provide some feedback to help the developers create the best game that they can.

If you're interested in Bierzerkers, you can grab it on Steam for $9.99.
