Halloween party ideas 2015

Onion Games has yet to release Million Onion Hotel, the game that won them two awards at BitSummit last year (their web site says it's coming soon), but this year they were showing a new offering. It's called Brave Yamada-kun and it's a cross between an RPG and the kind of puzzle game in which you have to go over every space before leaving the room. It also has a wacky story about a boxer-clad programmer in love.

The main character, Yamada-kun, is in love with one of the women who works at his company. When he gets fired, he continues to pursue her... literally, but through a video game. He programs both her and him into the game and goes into it as the main character, with the player guiding him towards his princess. It's played for laughs and certainly no zanier than the magical soup in Million Onion Hotel. However, western players who care about how females are presented in games might find Brave Yamada-kun's theme objectionable.

Puzzles that ask the player to go over every square once usually require that the player go over every square. Brave Yamada-kun does not. However, the player can't maximize their loot and experience gains without doing so. While walking around the dungeon, though, any monster who sees Yamada-kun in their attack path will attack him. Sometimes the monster is right next to Yamada-kun and he can fight back; other times, the monster is attacking from afar and the player must soak up the hit and hope it doesn't leave poor Yamada-kun in a rut when he does get in melee range of something. That means that some paths through the dungeon are better than others and the player must consider their route carefully.

It's completely different from Million Onion Hotel in everything but its zany style. Both games are fun titles that are well suited to a touchscren but offer good fun that respects the player's time and intellect. There's no word on when either game will be out exactly, but they're good titles to look forward to.
