Classic RPGs such as Baldur's Gate, Ultima, and Icewind Dale have been a staple of many of our game libraries for over two decades. While the genre features great depth, customization, and epic stories, it's needless to say that the core mechanics needed a bit of a revamp to prevent the genre from becoming stale. Kyn attempts to take these classic mechanics and put a more fast-paced twist on them to create an RPG with the depth of the classics, and the quick combat system we've come to expect from today's games.
Kyn is set in a world that combines Viking mythology with the magic of a fantasy world. Kyn boasts a vast world to explore, with its own secrets and mysterious to uncover. Along your journey, you will be tasked with defeating dangerous enemies, encountering characters in need, and solving challenging puzzles.
The main mechanic that seems to set Kyn apart from its competitors would be the implementation of a classic RPG battle-system that is much faster-paced. Pausing, which is a major part of the classics, is not allowed in Kyn. While there is an ability to slow time for a short period to allow you to set your attacks up, many of your decisions will have to be made on the fly and with great speed. With a combat system that feels more like an RTS, you can expect to encounter some challenging and frantic battles as you have to react quickly to your enemies' every move.
During combat, you'll be able to select any of the members of your party individually, as well as the party as a whole. This will allow you to move specific characters to locations that best fit their abilities, and to keep the weaker members of the party out of harm's way. Scanning the battlefield is extremely important, as you'll have to be on the lookout for opportunities to create traps as well as areas that would make for good choke points. Whenever you find yourself struggling during a combat encounter, you can slow time for a bit in order to arrange your party as you see fit.
In Kyn, your party can contain up to six characters. Outfit your party with whatever types of heroes you would like to fit your play style. Each member can be equipped with weapons and armor to tailor them to a specific role that you'd like them to play on your team. On top of weapons and armor, you are also able to allocate points into your characters' abilities each time they level up, meaning that you can build them from the ground up to ensure that they are exactly the type of character that you'd like to play.
Kyn also features an in-depth crafting system, which allows you to use various materials you've collected to craft some of the game's most powerful items. Collecting materials is as simple as finding them in chests, and through looting vanquished enemies. Once you have the materials necessary for each recipe, you'll be able to combine them through a simple interface that allows you to easily make the items that you desire.
While the classics such as Baldur's Gate and Planescape still hold up and are very playable to this day, it's also fantastic to see indie developers attempting to put their own spin on the classic formula. Kyn is one such game, and does a very solid job of providing an RPG experience that is both rich and entertaining. If you're interested in having a look at Kyn, you can grab it on Steam for $19.99.
