Typically, when someone hears that a game has been ported from mobile to PC, they tend not to jump up and down in excitement. Unfortunately, the majority of titles that manage to make it to Steam from mobile devices end up being barely playable, let alone enjoyable. Thus, imagine my surprise when I came across Piloteer, a charming, yet extremely challenging game that might trigger some of the most absurd emotional changes that I have ever experienced in a game. Who would have thought that keeping your balance while using a jetpack was so difficult?
Developed by Whitaker Trebella, and originally released in June on mobile devices, Piloteer was met with a solid response. The game places you in the shoes of a famous inventor with only one goal in mind: to convince the world that jetpacks are not something to be feared and considered dangerous, but instead a tool that should be utilized by all. Apparently, the way to showcase the safety and practicality of the jetpack is to fly face-first into the nearest obstacle.
In terms of its art style, I find Piloteer to be gorgeous. It's "hand-sketched" aesthetic is extremely charming and does a great job creating an almost whimsical feeling throughout its three unique environments. Combining the charming aesthetic with a fantastical soundtrack is really the icing on the cake, so to speak. Taking a few minutes to slowly hover your way around a level while enjoying the ambiance rewards you with an extremely relaxing experience.
In Piloteer, the challenges are organized into three separate environments in the Career game mode. Each environment is unlocked by completing a certain amount of challenges in the previous. These challenges can include things such as maintaining an air time of 5 seconds, landing on a specific piece of scenery, or flying above a certain height and landing safely on the ground. Each level took anywhere from 20-30 minutes to complete, which leads to about an hour to two hours of gameplay depending on your skill level.
While the game manages to be extremely challenging, and even a bit frustrating in a few occasions, I found the controls to be simple to pick up, but extremely difficult to master. I felt that the physics made sense, which allowed me to pull off some extremely satisfying moves. The satisfaction of completing a particularly difficult challenge is well worth the struggle that it takes to get there, as I often found myself throwing my hands up after completing a challenge that I was hung up on for a few minutes.
While mobile ports aren't always fantastic, the mouse-driven menu and controller support that were added to Piloteer made it feel like the full package in terms of a port. With re-done high-definition artwork, a new UI, and Steam Trading Card and Achievement integration, the PC version of Piloteer is definitely the definitive version. If you're looking for a game to keep you busy for a few minutes at a time during a lunch break, then I highly recommend giving it a look. Releasing September 25th, you will be able to purchase Piloteer, which will be playable on Windows, Mac, and Linux through Steam. It is currently available for purchase through the App Store and Play Store for $2.99 as well if you're looking for the mobile version.
