In the days before smartphones, teens had to sneak their adult imagery the hard way: from the family computer. After the family went out, or everyone went to sleep, you'd need to skulk down to the computer room. Muffle the beeps and boops of the computer booting up, and then carefully, CAREFULLY find the images you were looking for. And then would come the paranoia. Is someone behind you? Are you about to get caught? Is that your mom's footsteps coming down the stairs? The creak of dad going to the bathroom?
James Earl Cox III's free (sorta NSFW) adventure game You Must Be 18 or Older to Enter emulates those terrifying days. You can look up adult images, all created in the game's ASCII art, but you have to be vigilant for those sounds behind you. The game constantly surprises you with warnings of oncoming parents and potential discovery, but it's up to you to decide if you should turn around to check or not. It's a neat snapshot of those days of mixed up arousal, confusion, and fear.
You Must Be 18 or Older to Enter is available for free on Itch.io. For more information on the game and developer James Earl Cox III, you can head to the developer's site or follow them on Itch.io, YouTube, and Twitter.
