The Legend of Bum-Bo sees us battling cute, disgusting things using bodily fluids and stray bones as we seek our lost coin in this week’s IGP First Look.
The game is a neat entry in the Binding of Isaac universe, seeing us join an otherwise happy creature who gets put in a real sour mood when an evil presence steals his coin. He doesn’t even hesitate before leaping in a sewer loaded with every unpleasant excretion you can think of, quickly weaponizing the poo and snot to fight against the ghastly creatures that lurk beneath the streets.
It all sounds a bit like Boogerman, but it’s a lot closer to Candy Crush, honestly. You will be matching up items on a grid, trying to get four-of-a-kind together to arm yourself. Matching four bones or teeth lets you attack your enemies, and matching four boogers or poos allows you to place a block in your enemy’s path. These blocks are vital as they keep you from getting hit, and you can only take a few thumps before you’re dead and need to restart your run.
The result is a tense puzzle game where you need to make the best of the moves available, requiring a sharp mind (at least a sharper one than I have). Even if you’re dying while immersed in excrement, the game still has an adorable charm that makes the gross-outs moments a lot less stomach-churning. Adding in some randomness and a genuine challenge brings this all together into a fun (if sickening) package.
