Halloween party ideas 2015

Time moves at a third of the speed when Berry the Scientist quaffs their latest potion. However, there’s more than a few people out there to stop them in their tracks.

Berry The Scientist is a follow-up to the fun (if tough) Terry The Skeleton from Ahmed Khalifa (Amidos). The first game was a Proc Jam entry from last year, with the heart of the game being that the player moved in real-time while enemies moved in a turn-based manner. They were vicious, though – much more so than in the newer game. Something does persist between the two games, though – both our scientist and skeleton protagonist’s hunter. Both of them are being hunted down by a/the church.

That’s just story, mind – a story which rears its head to introduce every new enemy type sent after you. That ranges from archers to mages (mages?) to mercenaries. Each enemy attacks in a different way, from swiping everybody in an adjacent spot, teleporting and leaving ice behind them, or blasting a zone with magic.

You’ve got three lives, but most importantly, you have the speed that I mentioned in the opening sentence. You can make three moves before the enemy does their attack. There is something else though, something that, similarly, both Terry and Berry have in common. They can either move in single steps or in full dashes until they hit an object. In the case of Berry The Scientist, this means that you can use your first move to dash to a wall, second to wipe out an enemy, and third to jet away. It becomes a bit like a dance – much more than the rapid splattering of movements in the real-vs-turn-based first game.

Berry The Scientist is playable now on itch.io.
