Games such as Depression Quest and Actual Sunlight are interesting approaches to the increasingly-common representation of mental illness in video games. While many of these experiences are designed as a fiction-y tool for everyone to gain an understanding of the bleak world that is depression first-hand, countless classic horror stories are still waiting for us out there, lurking behind the veil of mental disorder. Silence of the Sleep explores that fictional, fantastic path that is (apparently) far from the real world mental struggle, but no less interesting.
This one-man production (available on Steam) is a psychological horror 2D side-scroller with an unsettling nature, just waiting to lure you right into a trap. Jacob Reeves is ill, and he has chosen death. He has thrown himself into the blackness of death, only to wake up in a strange hotel with no memories and no easy way out.
A treacherous game that jumps abruptly from eerie scenarios softened with evocative music to hideous monsters of death and pain. Half-puzzles and half-eclectic combination of curious mechanics, this is obviously a dark world that's worthy of a deeper exploration - a trip into the disturbing afterlife of the dead silhouettes.
