Nobody ever did cosmic horror the way Lovecraft did almost a century ago and apparently very few people seem to get what it was the gentleman from New England actually did. Thankfully though, horror-adventure maestro AgustÃn Cordes and his Senscape team seem to have finally come up with the solution to the perfect and perfectly atmospheric lovecraftian game: The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. The first officially licensed Lovecraft game ever and the first one based on the writer's only novel-sized work.
Instead of Cthulhu and tentacles and all the cliches that usually go with any gaming reference to HPL, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward promises to take us back to old Providence, haunted Salem and those wisely unnamable horrors. Back to when Charles Dexter Ward and Dr. Marinus Willet faced the terrors unleashed by evil warlock Joseph Curwen and fought for their sanity and the world.
This, you see, will be a simultaneously subtle and grand horror experience; one that will utilize the knowledge of famed Lovecraft scholar S. T. Joshi in order to get everything right and evoke the universal dread of the original work.
What's more, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward will wisely be a properly paced 3rd person point-and-click adventure. A stunning one too if the first screens and videos are anything to go by and one I will definitely be backing over at Kickstarter; probably generously enough to get me a boxed copy of the game and a download of the documentary that will go along with it: The Shadow Over Providence.
Mind you, you can already secure your copy of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward for as low as $15, though admittedly the higher tiers do offer their fair share of exotic rewards. The game will be released for Windows, Mac and Linux and I frankly can't wait.
