Halloween party ideas 2015

necrodancer.jpgAward-winning roguelike Crypt of the Necrodancer has launched out of early access after nine months. In the time since it hit early access, the developers have added more content and polish to the game while its core gameplay has remained as fun as ever. If you've been waiting for full release to get this roguelike with its rhythmic time pressure to think fast, now is the time.

There are now ten playable characters, each with their own play conditions. Two are unlocked from the beginning, the default gameplay Cadence and the Bard, which allows for completely traditional roguelike play without the time pressure. Other characters include Melody, who attacks enemies by moving next to them rather than indirectly, and the Monk, which dies instantly if he picks up any gold. There is also a character named Coda which is only unlocked by beating the game with all other nine characters. The developers aren't sure it's actually possible to win with Coda because the difficulty is so high.

Items and equipment have been added by the score. There are new kinds of enemies and new variations on enemy types that have existed since the beginning. Certain wall blocks, when destroyed, reveal portals to special rooms that contain shops or monsters. The game is as brutally fair as it has always been, with everything having consistent effects that can be learned and planned for or around.

Brace Yourself Games has also filled out the story by attaching cutscenes to Melody and Aria as well as the default Cadence. A number of other bits of polish have been added, including alternate tile graphics for decoration and splash screens for bosses. There are two alternate versions of the soundtrack, a metal version and an EDM version, which can be set for each character individually and are attached to Melody and Aria by default. And the fourth and final zone is also now playable.

necrodancer2.jpgI love Crypt of the Necrodancer. It has all the hallmarks of a traditional roguelike (predictable enemies with set weaknesses, equipment you can rely on, and the like) with just the addition of rhythm to keep you on your toes. Unless you're playing the Bard for traditional roguelike 100% turn-based play, enemies move on the beat and you can move once per beat. You can stop moving any time you want, but the enemies won't stop and you lose your gold bonus, to boot. It really keeps you on your toes.

Crypt of the Necrodancer is available on Steam for Windows, Mac, and Linux and is currently 25% off the regular price of $14.99.
