Antihero is billed as a 4X-style strategy game set in the underworld of a gas lit Dickensian city. You set out to conquer and control the criminal underbelly as the manager of a thieves' guild, where you will command the seediest of the seedy. Urchins and murderers, thieves and thugs are yours to direct through this city's underworld. Tim Conkling's stylish crime game is slated for release in early 2016, but it will be shown off at PAX Prime's Indie Megabooth August 28-31, with the development team in proper cosplay regalia.
The game, which will feature asynchronous multiplayer as well as single-player gameplay, will release on PC, Mac, iOS and Android devices. It's style and aesthetic are shown off nicely as well as a bit of gameplay in their newly released teaser, set to a rather upbeat "murder ballad" which seems to fit the game extremely well.
Visually the big-headed sprites are distinct and eye-catching, and as such you should always know what you're dealing with when you see a character at a glance. Thanks to the consistent aesthetic in the design, I think the game will be a delight to look at, and if the murder ballad is any indication, it seems the aesthetic itself is appealing in a lot of fun ways.
Claiming to have fast-paced gameplay despite being a turn-based strategy title, the teaser shows off some of the interactions offered. Attacking thugs, planting traps, and staking out buildings all get shown off, often to the disposal of the big-headed thugs involved. Also planned are bribery, manipulation, and assassination attempts, which should add some strategic depth. All of this stems off a thematically consistent and accurate upgrade system which I imagine enthusiasts of the genre and setting both will greatly enjoy.
Antihero looks like a game to definitely follow if you like strategy gameplay. It's already been Greenlit, and the developer has an absolute grasp on the design aesthetic. It's easy to see how much care has been put into this game already. I look forward to seeing more in the coming months up to the release, and anybody who wants something Dickensian - a game with an (Oliver) Twist, as the developer likes to phrase it - should keep an eye on this title.
