Steam's Greenlight service can be overwhelming at times. The sheer number of games to peruse can be staggering, and that alone is often enough to turn people away from helping titles get put onto the distribution platform. Jamaican developer Spritewrench has recently put their upcoming Rogue-lite dungeon crawler, Shiny Gauntlet, into the gauntlet that is Greenlight in hopes of getting their adventurous dungeon crawler seen by the world.
The artwork in Shiny Gauntlet is cute and surprisingly colourful. The big character sprites that complement its cartoonish aesthetic makes it so the game never feels bleak despite the amount of darkness in the dungeon. When you enter a room, most of it is black until you approach an unlit torch, at which point it illuminates a small radius. You can also carry a bottled firefly to emit light from your character to help ward off the dark. This light mechanic gives the game some visual flair that I really enjoyed.
Another mechanic involving the bottle is the implementation of hunger. You can eat your firefly to replenish strength (a feature that is helpfully shown to you in an extremely brief tutorial at the start of the demo), and the game promises to allow you to bottle and eat enemy remains as power-ups.
You can choose from several classes, five starting classes and a total of twenty. The starters are the standard sort you would expect from an action RPG, but they are visually distinct and have unique powers and statistics, and that should be enough to go along with the gameplay itself in order to make the game engaging long-term. It will be interesting to see if the additional classes provide enough variety to make players invest the time to discovering them.
Being a Rogue-lite, the gauntlet that your play through is procedurally generated, and there's a good selection of layouts and hazards to deal with so far. You'll fend off groups of enemies with varying attack types, and learn how to use your skills and special abilities to continue progressing. When playing the demo I was surprised to discover that I could reflect projectiles back with the Priest's cudgel. These sort of moments add to the overall depth of a game, and I hope to discover more in the released game.
Currently in the challenge mode, wherein you chase the Wily Cultist who has stolen the Shiny Shard, each room you enter has the Cultist appear and use one of the exit points from the room to show you where you need to go next. Unfortunately, this breaks up the flow of gameplay a little bit, and while it is nice to have that for navigation purposes, I feel it could throw some people out of the experience. Still, in the current state of development, this could be improved and with the level of polish and detail shown so far, I wouldn't be surprised to see this become something that works out mechanically.
Shiny Gauntlet is an ambitious project for sure. There's a lot promised so far, but even in the alpha demo, there are signs that Spritewrench is up to the challenge of meeting those ambitions. There is still room for improvement, but it's shaping up to be an exciting title that I believe could definitely stand out among the plethora of games on Greenlight. If you like dungeon crawlers, follow this title closely, because I think it will be something you'll want to spend some time with. The game is scheduled for release on October 1st, 2015.
