‘Myrrh’ is a Challenging Journey to Bring a Baby to a Mountaintop - [INDIEGAMING]

Nothing matters if you can’t get that baby to the top of the mountain.

Myrrh, from bwalter, is a wordless journey about delivering a baby to the top of a mountain and evading the dangers which stand in your way. There’s another stickler, too: as per the Ludum Dare 44 theme, your life is the currency. In this case, it’s the currency with which you save, surrendering a heart to preserve your progress.

It’s a currency you’ll be hard pressed to save up, too. You’re defenseless in your climb, instead having to rely on clever timing and a bit of scouting ahead in order to evade the droves of evil beasts which block your way. Minotaurs, spell slinging wizards, and more are littered around the mountain, and they are all going to do everything they can to stop you from delivering the baby.

Even though Myrrh is short (it was made in less than 48 hours, of course), it’s a really fun experience, and learning the range and movement patterns of the enemies really feels like a rewarding experience. Patience is definitely key to surviving in your deadly quest.

I think, and this might be a bit cheap to say because I say it often about games, that the artwork is absolutely exceptional. The retro style with modern animation effects is really cute and easy to watch, and the story elements in a detailed/not-detailed pixel style are full of emotion and absolutely wonderful to look at. Did I mention that the entire story of Myrrh is handled without a single word, too? I think that’s a thing to really be celebrate.
