If you’re one to follow a strategy guide, complete with chest locations, to get the best gear, Ephermeral Tale may not be your best match.
Those with a true sense of adventure will love the game’s randomized loot mechanic that lets you build a unique character with every play through.
You can write your story however you choose with the loot you are dealt. Of course, if you’re hell-bent on a certain play-style, you can always just grind your days away until you get what you want. It’s a staple of JRPGs, after all.
There will be five dungeons for you to test your build out on. You could rack up victories against the smaller bosses, but perhaps your build will fall short against some of the hidden baddies. You’ll want to make sure you can roll with the punches, depending on what monster is throwing them. Those who are inclined to check under every rock and hidden path will be the ones to get the most out of this game, though, especially with special allies and secret vendors at stake. There’s a lot to get your hands into.
On top of its intriguing loot mechanic, Ephemeral Tale offers an array of creatively concocted monsters. They are some of the more unique-looking creatures I’ve seen in a while, personally. It’s hard not to appreciate good monster design in a game where you’ll be doing a lot of beast-bashing, after all. With dynamic camera movements and these quirky creatures, you won’t have a dull battle.
