Just when you think you’re doing well in roguelike tactical RPG Star Renegades, the game will adapt its enemies to push you even harder.
Star Renegades will have you taking part in the procedural rebellion against The Imperium, leading your forces through generated events and shifting missions. It’s hard to know what to expect from the game when you land on a planet and start to fight back against the Imperium, as the game constantly builds new challenges for you to face. Try to be ready for a bit of everything.
If you think amassing a group of tough cyborgs and warriors is enough, you’d be wrong. The game’s colossal machine foes fight intelligently and will work together, as I saw for myself from the game’s BitSummit demo. The hostile machines will use attacks that will chew your characters up unless you make careful use of interrupts, counters, and moves that upset the turn order. You want to get ahead of anything that is out to hurt you, as it won’t take long to be taken down.
If that doesn’t seem too hard at first, Star Renegades still has ways to make things more difficult. The Adversary System creates bosses and ruthless foes that evolve over play. It studies your weaknesses and the things you rely upon, building devious foes that are built specifically to break you. I thought I was doing well in that demo until I came across an enemy that just tore my party apart, having been seemingly built just to counter my play style.
The game’s striking pixel art foes and locales mixed with its challenging, thoughtful combat made Star Renegades a compelling experience. I’m very curious to see how the full version will brutalize me in 2020.
