The Night Ripper will have players walking the streets alone after work, dealing with the frightening presence of a masked killer who will make for a terrifying journey home.

The Night Ripper follows Rachel, a young woman who is just trying to get home after her shift. The police have cordoned off a part of the street, though, blocking her regular route. This sends her down dark, PS1-style alleys and streets where she'll meet a few people, find some useful items, and likely stumble across the masked killer everyone is looking for. Should she find this unsettling figure, it will be time to rush through the tight corridors of the claustrophobic, shadowy areas around her, using whatever weapons she can find while (literally) fighting panic.

The Night Ripper, like many of developer Puppet Combo's other horror outings, creates a powerful discomfort with its visual style, setting the player on edge while taking them into a world of 80's horror/slasher films. It's all well worth looking into for fans of the genre, and this one in particular might make your own walks home at night seem just a little bit more unsettling.

The dastardly Amadeus Guildenstern traveled through time and kidnapped all the presidents! Even the bad ones! It's up to you, a super sneaky secret agent from the Department of Sneakin', to stop his devious plans of world domination and rescue the presidents.

Never Stop Sneakin' is the latest release from Dean Dodrill (of Dust: An Elysian Tale fame) and it's a bit of a surprise in many ways. The game is exclusive to the Nintendo Switch for now and it eschews Dust's deep gameplay mechanics in favor of simplified top-down stealth action. It is also an unbelievably silly parody of the Metal Gear Solid series.

Using either the analog sticks or touch controls, you steer your agent through procedurally generated maze-like levels full of guards, sentries, and other things that are supposed to keep intruders away. Actions are fully automated: just sneak up on an enemy for a silent takedown, or shoot them with a bullet if they detect you. You do have a bullet, right? These things are hard to come by, making a stealthy approach necessary.

What sets this apart from other stealth games is the pacing: Never Stop Sneakin' truly feels like stealth on steroids. Forget about cowering in a corner and patiently waiting for your moment to strike. Here, you're zipping around the levels, taking down guards left and right without pause. In fact, it feels best when you're not thinking, just acting and reacting. Yes, this is simplified, maybe even too simplified, but it cuts all the right things to make it entertaining and, most importantly, feel right.

What's more, this game is funny. Don't even think you'll get some sort of sensible plot here, the story is constantly chasing the next joke or the next silly take on genre tropes. And it actually hits the mark pretty often.

Unfortunately, all of this feels a tad too repetitive in the long run, but the Switch's portable, pick-up-and-play design and the fact that you basically cannot unlearn any of the core mechanics allow you to put Never Stop Sneakin' aside for a bit and then come back again. After all, the presidents need you! Even the bad ones.

Between mobile offerings like Paint It Back and PC series like Hexcells, the nonogram/Picross-inspired style of logic puzzlers have had a steady flow of interesting games. Delete is the newest entry to the category, taking a unique perspective-based and level-twisting approach to the puzzles.

Delete starts out simply, with single planes and small grids. As with other games in the genre, you'll need to use numbers to logically figure out each tiles need to be marked and which don't, no guesses required. And then the levels start expanding: cubes and rectangles, 3D shapes with multiple sides and planes, and then buttons that change the shape of levels. Shapes separate, slide-out panels are revealed, and eventually you can even rotate sections or even then the entire level.

This shifting of stages both allows for creative and interesting designs, and adds another avenue to glean knowledge for puzzling solving, since different configurations may change number of surrounding tiles to mark.

Beavers Be Dammed is a co-op game that revolves around a couple of wood-obsessed beavers. Your goal of moving logs from a sawmill to the drop point may SEEM simple, but you're sure to encounter some increasingly difficult obstacles while having to coordinate with a whole other person!

You wake up and everyone on the colony is dead. What happened? How can you escape from there? And... who are you, anyway? This scenario hardly sounds innovative, but science-fiction adventure The Mind's Eclipse still has a few surprises in store for you.

In true adventure gaming fashion, you explore the derelict space station, solve a few rather easy inventory puzzles, and try to piece together the fate of the station's crew by reading log entries which are scattered all over the place. Since everyone's dead, that's pretty much all you do, but it's intriguing enough.

Actually, you do have someone to keep you company: the rather enigmatic L, an AI companion inside your head, offers help and the occasional snarky reply. (You keep wondering if she's really on your side, but at least she's better than that weird COSy thing that sometimes just appears in your mind and... just... takes over.)

The game's presentation appears rather sparse, with static screens in hand-drawn black and white and atmospheric background music. This perfectly adds to the atmosphere, rendering yor exploration solitary and oppressive. It also let's you focus on the narrative and perfectly fits the game's underlying themes.

At the end of the day, The Mind's Eclipse offers intriguing sci-fi trappings and - without venturing too far into spoiler territory - a memorable exploration of grief and loss with a fair bit of horror thrown into the mix. That's hardly uplifting stuff, but it's a short, captivating experience very much worth your time.

Legrand Legacy: Tale of the Fatebounds calls itself "a love letter to our all time favorite JRPGs", and judging from the city populating drawn from Suikoden, the involved turn-based combat it pulls from Shadow Hearts, and the complex storyline not unlike Final Fantasy, it's a well-deserved claim. Taking players on a journey from slave to world-saving warrior, it promises an incredible adventure and reams of tantalizing, deep side-activities that are so rarely seen in games any more.

Finn starts life as a slave, but a demonstration of unknown power soon puts him on a road to saving his owner's daughter, meeting up with powerful warriors, and eventually saving a world from an ancient conflict that (surprise, surprise) is starting to rear its head again. Saving the world isn't exactly easy, either, as Legrand Legacy doesn't let you just spam attack in its turn-based combat. Players have to hit the attack button with the right timing to boost damage, as well as know which elemental weaknesses to abuse to have a fighting chance. There will be no sleeping through combat in this game.

Still...saving the world can wait, right? Because collecting people to flesh out Dumville Castle carries its own appeal, entertaining players by letting them bring merchants, blacksmiths, and party members to join the fray and make the place seem a little more lived in. If hiring doesn't appeal, players can always take on narrative sidequests to flesh out character stories, practice fencing, scrap in hack n' slash fights, go fishing, and much more. There are tons of diversions in Legrand Legacy, bringing back one of the excellent qualities of old JRPGs.

They don't make games like this that often any more, so if you miss the variety and complexity of older JRPGs, you need to get in on this one.

You'd think that a game you've been anticipating ever since it was announced ages ago would somehow disappoint, no matter what. These things just cannot be measured against the giant expectations that have been building up over the years, they simply cannot be that good as you want them to be.

And yet, here we are and Iconoclasts, Joakim 'konjak' Sandberg's action platformer that has been seven years in the making, is finally out in the wilds, gracing your PCs, PS4s, and Vitas with its presence. The wait was all worth it.

In a world ruled by the mighty One Concern (which makes you think "boy band" but is really more like "evil empire"), choosing your profession is out of the question. You get a job assigned to you and you'd better be happy with that if you don't want to face 'penance' - which is just as nasty as it sounds, really.

Enter Robin, a taciturn young freelance mechanic - and sinner in the eyes of the One Concern - who somehow stumbles into this huge story, featuring a colorful cast, lots of drama, and boss fights. So many boss fights. The writing might not be the game's strongest part, but the charming world and likeable characters more than make up for it.

Besides, zipping through those wonderful levels is pure bliss. Jumping around, hitting things with your super-sized wrench, climbing ledges, or swimming underwater, it all feels so incredibly fluid and satisfying. The levels themselves might have a bit of backtracking now and then, but with all these bright colors and cleverly hidden secrets, they are a joy to behold.

If you're already familiar with konjak's earlier games, such as the Noitu Love titles, you know what to expect - except that Iconoclasts is such an evolution (ha!) of his earlier style, incorporating incredibly polished platforming, some Metroidvania elements, and lots of boss fights, which are clearly the game's highlights. And don't forget, this was all done by one person. It's a stunning achievement and, like I said, it was absolutely worth the wait.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it a remake or a demake? And anyway, what sinister programming magic is this? These questions might run through your head when you see LuftrauserZ, Paul Kollers's C64 port of Vlambeer's dogfighting arcade shooter Luftrausers.

Contrary to popular belief, the C64 is not quite dead yet. Developers like Koller and small publishers like RGCD keep the old bread box from dying by still putting out games for the home computer that was discontinued 24 years ago.

So-called demakes, interpretations of how a game might have looked and played like on older hardware, lend themselves well to publication on the C64. Paul Koller released other C64 demakes, such as C64anabalt, Micro Hexagon, and Super Bread Box, so tackling another Vlambeer game next seemed like a good fit.

Besides, Luftrausers feels just perfect for porting with its limited palette and nice, chunky sprites. And yes, I imagine that this plays all kinds of wonderful with a proper joystick. (Personally, I prefer the Quickshot II, but if you have to whip out that Competition Pro, well... whatever works, right?)

The game can actually be played on original hardware, but loading it up in an emulator and having fun on your machine of choice is also an option. In any case, it certainly feels like the authentic Luftrausers experience (which our very own Anthony Swinnich wrote about here, back in the day).

Destroy Space Aliens looks to appeal to alien haters and folks who dig the color green, taking players on an adventure through a castle filled with jerk aliens who are really messing up a house-sitting job.

Sir Frank Jones V has disappeared, leaving the player in charge of watching his castle. Naturally, this means that aliens will show up and make a huge mess of the place, forcing players to dig out swords and blasters to try to get them out before they call the rest of their friends over. They'll have to clear out ten bosses and hundreds of alien creatures all over the castle, and depending on how they do, they'll reach one of three different endings.

Destroy Space Aliens has some purposeful quirks to its design to keep players at it once they've already cleared out their alien squatters. The game has been designed for sequence breaking and speedruns, so players can get a little bit creative with how they go through it if they want to get a bit more out of the experience. Plus, if you get the monsters out faster, you may have a chance to clean up the mess the slimy buggers left behind before Sir Frank figures out you let creatures party in his castle.

I do love me a good roguelike, but these things are quite the time sink. Level up your puny little hero, explore vast labyrinths, amass riches - that stuff usually takes a considerable amount of time. But fret not, Realm of the Ghost King respects your time, offering bite-sized sessions that will easily fit into your coffee break.

The game has eight randomly generated dungeons for you to conquer - and they're actually quite small. However, they are inhabited by nasty little creatures such as bats and sentient poison mushrooms and whatnot. You, on the other hand, aren't your usual heroic self either - each of the nine unlockable classes is some kind of monster with special abilities.

Realm of the Ghost King does away with stats altogether. The only thing you need to keep track of is the amount of souls that you harvest from your fallen foes. These serve as a sort of currency to either use your special ability or to raise your health in the game's not easily accessible shops. There are also bombs that let you blow up some walls and escape from hairy situations.

All of this is incredibly accessible while also deeper and more tactical than it first appears. Granted, sometimes you're stuck in that same old song and dance where you're waiting for an enemy to get within range first so that you can hit them and not the other way round - and this can be quite the problem due to the levels being so small.

Other than that, learning how to use your powers to your advantage and slowly vanquishing those dungeons in order to become the new dungeon boss is pretty damn good. Realm of the Ghost King might not have the same staying power as its bigger siblings, but that's the point. If you're short on time, this is the roguelike for you.

Remember Billy Blaze? Also known as Commander Keen, he is fondly remembered for his action platforming exploits in the early nineties. The Commander Keen games were in many ways leading the way in the pre-Doom shareware era and are still fondly remembered by many players. 25 years later, along comes a little series called Cally's Caves. 12-year-old me would have played the hell out of its latest chapter, Cally's Caves 4.

37-year-old me is pretty excited about this trip down nostalgia lane, too. While the focus is clearly on the action in this action platformer, you still, run, jump, and shoot your way through literally hundreds of small levels inhabited by weirdly mundane enemies such as mad soccer players and knife-throwing cooks.

The levels feel somewhat samey, but they're short enough for you not to get bored. Besides, they give you ample opportunity to unload your whole arsenal on those baddies, which is rather satisfying. Weapons get stronger the more you use them and even evolve into much better weapons every few levels. I'm slightly disappointed that AER - Memories of Old didn't leave more of a lasting impression on me. I've been looking forward to this low-poly open world exploration adventure for a while, but now that it's been released, I don't really think about the game at all when I'm not playing it. However - and bear with me here, because this might sound weird - this is actually a good thing. You see, AER is all about enjoying the moment.

That moment when shapeshifting protagonista Auk takes to the air for the very first time and the music swells and off you go into the skies... that moment is pretty much perfect. This is such an uplifting, wonderful experience. You are, after all, flying, soaring above the clouds, right then and there, and it's such an enjoyable thing to do.

Exploring AER's open world is a delight. Instead of one connected landmass, there are several small islands floating in the clouds. You're free to explore them all without restrictions, and discovering new things feels rewarding on its own. While the game world isn't necessarily large, you can spend a few hours just flying around, taking in the sights, and discovering small, lovely details. Have you met the little lambs? They're just the cutest.

Your pilgrimage also takes you into old, abandoned temples that have you solving light environmental puzzles and enduring some rather annoying platforming sequences. You cannot fly in there, and at first this feels like you're being punished - grounded, so to speak - having to traverse these spaces in such a mundane and slow way. On second thought, this adds variety to the game and doesn't detract to much from all that flying.

There are no fail states. AER is completely non-violent and there is no way whatsoever to die. The only challenge you're faced with is finding out what is actually going on. You're on a pilgrimage of sorts and able to see spirits with your magical lamp. Oh, and there's a ghostly fox that's guiding you, and something bad happened in the past, and...

The problem with this is that the story feels way too fragmented, too haphazard. You can actually beat the game without having a clue what the hell you've been doing and what the point of it all was. This is not all bad, mind: if you just want to spend a few hours exploring and enjoying that gorgeous world, you can do just that. However, despite being an awfully pretty game, it doesn't leave much of a lasting impression. This is even more disappointing considering that there is actually quite a bit of backstory to discover if you pay attention.

In the end, you'll be left wondering how the game could have looked with a tighter narrative structure. Or you could rise into the sky, burst through the clouds, dive, and float, and just enjoy these moments. Yup, sounds like a very good plan to me.
