PAX hands on: one shot, one hit, one kill, Titan Souls is one fun game - [INDIEGAMING]

Titan Souls made its debut during the Ludum Dare game jam back in December. It quickly rose toward the top of the competition and deservedly so, it was great. It was so impressive, in fact, that Devolver Digital is now publishing a full version. The PAX Prime build made one thing clear: they haven't made the game any easier. And that's a good thing, because slaying foes with just one arrow should be difficult.

In many ways Titan Souls feels like a 2D Shadow of the Colossus. Your adventure takes place in a mostly-silent, bleak set of ruins which nature is desperately trying to reclaim but hasn't quite grown over yet. Exploration reveals ancient deities that you'll need to take down using your one arrow. Fire it off and you'll have to recollect it, either by running to grab it or telepathically recalling it.

Battle against the Titans follows a decidedly old-school line of thinking, and not just because it plays like a top-down Zelda style game. You'll need to not only memorize the patterns your foes move in, but you'll need to hit them without being hit yourself. Therefore, perfect play will equal success. The bosses know it's do-or-die as well, since both you and them have only one hit point each. Landing a hit will definitely require some experimentation, and probably a copious amount of deaths on your part, but persistence will often and eventually lead to perseverance.

There will be more than 20 fights in the game, which is good since they will comprise the majority of the challenges presented. The levels will have hidden features as well, but right now they're a secret to everyone. Titan Souls is planned for release in early 2015 for Windows, Mac, Linux, Playstation 4 and Vita.
