Halloween party ideas 2015

framed.png Framed, from Loveshack Entertainment, is a noir-themed puzzle game in which the player rearranges comic panels to change the outcome of the puzzle-page. Each panel represents multiple possibilities, with the action that occurs in one panel dependent upon the context created by the panel before it, and if the panels are not in the right order, then the story gets cut short. The player shapes the story in a very tangible sense.

The story in Framed revolves around people all seeking possession of a briefcase. One person has the briefcase at any given time and is trying to get away with it. What the player does is rearrange the panels of the comic so that the character can avoid pursuit.

Relationships between the panels within a puzzle-page are easy to see. Each puzzle revolves around some kind of spatial relationship; street intersections, different levels connected by stairs or ladders, or the like. The player can quickly grasp the logic that dictates how the panels within a puzzle-page relate to each other and use it to solve the puzzle. As the game goes along, the player will have to manipulate the panels in a couple of new ways. The player is always given clear visual indicators, though, which is important for a game that has almost no text. And the game is colorblind friendly; in only one page is color the only indicator of the relationship between panels, and the colors chosen are red and blue.

One thing that may deter some people from getting the game is that it's short. I didn't record how long it took me to play, but it can't have been more than about an hour. Since the game is $4.99, some people won't be happy with that. It's a brilliant hour of gameplay, though, with a great deal of polish. The cool colors of the background go well with the silhouette characters and the music, which is dormant while the player is considering what to do, kicks into full gear once the player sets the character in motion through the page.

It's out now for iOS and works just as well on the smaller iPhones as it does on the iPad. It's been nominated for and/or won a ridiculous number of awards, so if you like short, high quality games with new takes on narrative, Framed is a game you should definitely grab. The developers have not announced plans to release it on Android, but a PC release is in the works.
