Da Neel's A Box Full of Joy begins with Frank, bloodied on the sidewalk outside of a club. Not that he seems too bent out of shape about it or anything else that's happening in the fever dream his life has become. As you explore, reality breaks down, challenging you to draw meaning from the bizarre conversations and occurrences within the game world. It's a dark, nightmarish experience that twists in my thoughts after having played it, lasting long after my lonely walk through the game's final screens.
The artistic style, looking like some unique mixture of PS1-era polygon graphics and 2D artwork, distorts everything and everyone in the game world, setting the tone for the bad dream you're about to play through. The characters all look off, with normalcy giving me pause. I don't trust what looks normal in this game, as if the real world is the one that's lying to me. The music coaxes this feeling along, playing droning mechanical noise that is beautiful in its own way. It sets a tension into the game's world that is hard to shake off, increasing my distrust of what I see around me. The sound effects are blood-curdling, too, with one scream in particular being so unsettling that I shut the game off the first time I played.
A Box Full of Joy is short, but it will take multiple plays to really dredge the story out of what you're doing. It settles into the mind and takes root as you play, teasing an answer that's just out of reach. The bizarre landscapes and twisted beings within them hint at what the game is trying to say, but the harder I grasp at that meaning, the more it seems to slip away. It's a surreal, horrific experience as you explore someone's life turning to nightmares, all told through symbolism and surreal words, but one well worth exploring.
