Things seemed to be quiet with Niklas Swanberg's Sylvio, but, like the electronic voice phenomena (EVP) the game is based on, just because you can't detect anything doesn't mean nothing is going on. Having quietly released a new trailer a few weeks ago, it's easy to see that a lot has been going on with the visuals, puzzles, combat, and recording abilities since we first covered the game way back in September. Now, its creepy visuals and sounds are heading toward release, with the full version of the game hitting Steam this Friday, June 5.
Sylvio stars Juliette Waters, a lady who specializes in capturing electronic voice phenomena - ghostly voices that can only be detected by recording equipment. It's not as easy as messing with a tape deck in a graveyard, so Juliette will have to speed up, slow down, and reverse her recordings until she can figure out what the spirits are trying to say about the spooky park she's come to. Luckily, your voice recorder does vibrate as it nears voices, so you won't have to wander blind while searching for those sounds. The locations have gotten a lot more frightening since Swanberg last demonstrated the game, though, showing off newer, more varied locales and some really unsettling artwork. Who hangs these kinds of things in their home, anyway?
The combat seems to have been pushed aside a bit in favor of more item puzzles, using the strange firearm Juliette carries to solve problems rather than clobber ghosts. Her gun collects clutter from the environment, firing it using compressed air (as far as I can tell), and she can use it to activate distant mechanisms. Even so, she does end the trailer by firing it at a strange figure in the distance. Will shooting apples at shadow people jive with the game's eerie voice recordings? You can find out this Friday.
