Following a successful Kickstarter campaign filled with promises of a modern Syndicate and an early access period that helped iron out all sorts of tiny problems, Satellite Reign has finally been released and has turned out to be way more than a great re-imagining of one of my all-time favourite games. It's an excellent, beautiful, impressively ambitious and subtly innovative RTS that might just end up being my dearest 2015 game.
I am thus certain that both people who enjoyed the classic Syndicate games and those who have been waiting for a squad based strategic RTS with RPG elements will love Satellite Reign. They'll love the plot, the depiction of a futuristic corporate-run society, the class based systems, the simple stealth mechanics and the excellent combat.
Above all though, they'll deeply appreciate Satellite Reign's huge, open-world cyberpunk city -- a beautifully realized and richly animated dystopic urban environment that feels alive and realistically segregated. The rich live in their penthouses, the poor occupy the slums of the lower levels, the power of the corporations is omnipresent, hovercars roam the roads, markets are packed and huge animated billboards light dark alleyways.
It's a wonderful digital playground and its filled with missions, tactical challenges, terminals to be hacked, machines to hardwire, shadowy places to hide in and towers to break into. A seamless setting where you'll get to experiment with your squad's skills and tackle modestly taxing missions. Possibly for the greater good too, albeit with a reasonable profit.
