AMD has begun sampling its next-generation "Summit Ridge" eight-core processor based on the "Zen" micro-architecture, to its industry partners. Typically, AMD sends them engineering samples of its upcoming chips, along with a reference-design motherboard developed in-house by AMD, which allows its partners to test the various platform features and connectivity options. The company's socket AM4 platform reference board is codenamed "Myrtle." Italian tech-site Bits'n'Chips posted three AIDA64 benchmark results of an eight-core "Summit Ridge" chip clocked at 3.00 GHz, paired with dual-channel DDR4-2400 MHz memory.
The results indicate big IPC and per-core performance gains for AMD. The 3 GHz eight-core chip scored 229% higher in the AIDA64 CPU-Hash benchmark than a six-core Intel Core i7-5820K clocked at 3.30 GHz, and 275% higher performance than a quad-core Core i7-6700K at 4.00 GHz. Clock-for-clock, and core-for-core, "Summit Ridge" is faster than "Skylake" in this test. In the Memory Read test, however, the AMD machine was found to be 11% slower than the i7-6700K with dual-channel DDR4-2133, despite running faster dual-channel DDR4-2400 memory. In the new FP32-Ray Trace benchmark of AIDA64, which isn't very multi-core intensive, the 3.00 GHz "Summit Ridge" chip was found to be 7.7% faster than the 3.40 GHz Core i7-4930K, but a significant 22% slower than the Core i7-6700K.
