Halloween party ideas 2015

You'd think that the life of a hookshot-wielding space pirate would be serious business, a grim tale of survival amidst the uncaring cosmos, bloody life-and-death struggles, the works. But then, Tribute Games had slightly different ideas and thankfully, Flinthook is anything but grim. In fact, Captain Flinthook might be the cheeriest little space pirate you've ever seen!

Our eponymous hero has three tools at his disposal: the all-important hookshot, a blaster, and a belt with slow-mo powers. Armed with these items, you enter enemy spaceships, steal treasure and complete bounties for particularly nasty space baddies. Conveniently located grappling points allow you to zip around each room, dodging and weaving and getting rid of your foes.

There's a bit of a learning curve, but once you've mastered the art of not accidentally flinging yourself at the enemy or the nearest spiky wall, using the hookshot is pure joy. You can zip from one end of a room to the other in two or three seconds, allowing for some breakneck stunts and incredible mobility.

What the enemy lacks in speed they make up for in sheer numbers. All different kinds of space baddies are out to stop you from robbing them blind. Coupled with the environmental hazards this makes for some very taxing challenges. Seriously, what's with all those spikes inside of spaceships? Who designs these things?

The game often feels similar to Cellar Door Games' Rogue Legacy, but it has tighter pacing. Where the latter offers a long, grueling slog through a big castle, Flinthook's smaller levels have more contained challenges, allowing for "just one quick run" which, of course, can easily turn into hours.

After each run, the gold you stole is converted into experience, and leveling up gives you card packs containing permanent perks. Other neat things are waiting to be discovered, making the game feel like an intergalactic treasure hunt. There's an overarching story as well, and the bounties you can collect are basically boss fights, but it'll take a while until you gained your sea space legs and mastered the hookshot.

While it is certainly challenging, Flinthook doesn't feel unfair. You just need to learn how to handle the things it throws at you and make full use of your tools. While this may be off-putting to some players, the game rewards the patient player with a surprising amount of depth and stuff to discover. Once you master Flinthook's controls, many hours of utterly charming space piracy await you.

You can purchase Flinthook from Steam, the Xbox Marketplace, and the PSN Store for $14.99. For more information, visit the game's website or follow developer Tribute Games on Facebook or Twitter.
