In Lazarus, from Constantin Liétard and Thomas Denis (collectively, Borderline Games) you’re not a revived person, instead simply a somehow-still-alive arm.
Normally when the word Lazarus is dug up for a game title, or as a game element, it is a clear biblical reference. The Lazarus Project, Operation Lazarus, Sargent Lazarus – however that name crops up, you can be dang sure that it’s about something coming back from the dead. Here’s an exception to the rule.
So, you’re a living arm. And while it’s never made clear exactly how you’ve managed to come back as an arm, your mission is clear: don’t let the baddies eat your body. This fits perfectly with the ‘Only One’ theme of the Game Maker Toolkit Jam 2019, of which it was an entry. The ‘Only One’ being the limb remaining active of your protagonist.
It’s all quite fun, actually. When I originally saw the itch.io page of the game, and its cartoon character lit up by light from above while dark creatures clamored around, I wasn’t quite sure what to make of the whole thing. I’m glad I played some of it though, and while there doesn’t appear to be a finite end, there’s certainly enough variety in the directions of approach from the enemies to make awkwardly ambling and delicately pivoting to swipe the enemies a fun way to spend a few minutes of your time.
