Defusing a bomb is a relatively common trope in movies and television, often used to establish tension and a sense of impending doom. While racing the clock before a bomb goes off is a common gaming trope, actually defusing it yourself is not quite as well represented. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes takes this concept and ratchets the tension up for not one, but multiple people through the use of the Oculus Rift and a lengthy manual. This game provided one of the most unique experiences in the PAX Prime 2014 Indie Megabooth.
The setup is relatively genius in its simplicity. One player puts on the Oculus headset and can see the bomb. The other players (one, two, or however many) can not see it, but they have an instruction manual for the bomb. There are all sorts of ifs and whens in the manual, and the details are important since each bomb is slightly-to-extremely different. Communicating information between the person with the headset and those with the manual then is paramount. Cooperation is the only way to prevent the bomb going off. Oh, and you only have five minutes to do this.
I expected there would be a lot more shouting and yelling between people while playing the game, but everyone I watched play and even those I played with worked extremely well together under the pressure. The tension was palpable, but no one cracked under the pressure. Most importantly, though, is the fact that I've never quite played a game like it. It felt really strange directing someone's actions without actually knowing what they were doing. A surprising level of trust develops between players in a short period, which is somewhat remarkable.
There's currently no release date pegged for Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, so keep an eye on the official site for updates on the upcoming Windows-based game.
