Halloween party ideas 2015

LOX_CombatYotums.jpgLords of Xulima, which recently launched out of Early Access on Steam, is an isometric, turn-based RPG inspired by classics such as Ultima and Might & Magic. It's hard to point to anything that would make Lords of Xulima stand out from the crowd. However, when I started playing it, it was engaging enough for me to look at the clock and be surprised to find that almost five hours had passed since I started playing and I really should have been in bed already.

In Lords of Xulima, the nine gods have receded from the world, caught up in a battle amongst themselves. The god of darkness and death has somehow acquired more power and is fighting the others for dominance. In their absence, the state of the world is changing. The player takes on the role of a man chosen by one of the embattled gods to sail across the sea to a land believed to be mythical and aid them in their fight.

A lot of the specific elements of the game that I might normally talk about in a review are perhaps best described as mediocre. The tutorial is text-heavy and and left me having to hunt for the level up button, but otherwise got me going without any problems; the voice acting is acceptable but not spectacular; the graphics are good but I wouldn't call them gorgeous; you can customize all of your party members except the main character. But the story is interesting enough, revealed through interactions with the NPCs and exploring the map. And the combat and survival systems have enough layers to them that I could spend a lot of words describing them (probably inadequately) and still not capture how natural and satisfying they feel to play with.

Lack of autosaving is the game's biggest flaw, followed by never telling the player what the keyboard shortcuts are. But there are three levels of difficulty to make sure that the game will be as challenging as one might want. Nothing is designated by color alone, making it colorblind friendly. None of the voice acting is without text, making it hearing-impaired friendly.

Although it's hard to describe what makes Lords of Xulima so engaging, I strongly recommend it to fans of computer RPGs. It's available now for Windows and Mac and in multiple editions via Steam or straight from Numantian Games. Some of the options for buying from the developer include physical goods such as boxed copies and printed books.
