Halloween party ideas 2015

dsm.jpgThe original Spy Hunter was a top-down arcade game that emulated a James Bond style car chase that lasted as long as the player could destroy other cars without being destroyed. Death Skid Marks is more or less a modern take on that with a road trip theme and roguelike elements. It's not family-friendly, but it is a lot of fun, mixing action arcade gameplay with strategic decision making and the extra spice that comes with permadeath.

The goal of Death Skid Marks is to get to a concert several hundred kilometers away, making sure to pick up a ticket for every passenger in the car before getting there. The distance is taken in stages, with each stage featuring one or more enemies trying to kill the player on the road. It's kill or be killed, and since the driver can't use weapons, they'll need to ram people into guard rails or off the road unless they pick up new passengers. At the end of a stage, the player will be presented with a choice of two street signs, which may or may not have a sign for a shop or other special pit stop location.

Shops are where the player can pick up new passengers, heal, buy weapons and other items, pick up new tasks to earn extra cash, upgrade the car or passengers, rearrange equipment and passenger locations, and the like. There are always new tasks to choose from and some healing options (for both passengers and car) available, but what other items are available depend on what kind of shop it is.

Aside from shops, there are a few special kinds of pit stops; a casino lets the player gamble cash on a slot machine, a Russian Roulette pitstop lets the player choose one passenger to play the dangerous game with an NPC opponent, and if the passenger survives they get a huge boost to their stats. There's also a shop that allows for combining weapons into upgraded versions, which makes the driver's ability to hold weapons he can't use quite useful.

All in all, Death Skid Marks gives the player a great deal of freedom of choice about how to deal with the random hand they are dealt each time. Periodic boss fights really test the player's skills and choices of upgrades and equipment. As I mentioned before, the game isn't family friendly; it has a certain vulgarity to it which is appropriate for the "road trip gauntlet of death to a metal concert" theme, even if it is laid on a bit thick in the tutorial.

Death Skid Marks is $9.99 on Steam for Windows. It can be purchased in a bundle with the soundtrack for $10.99.
