The Shield Maiden's journey is not a hopeful one. Her path lined with monsters of Norse lore and her life stained by the dark substance Eitr by Loki himself, there is little chance of her purging her fate, and that of the Yggdrasil tree, of the magical pollutants that consume it. A Shield Maiden does not bow to hopelessness, though. She does not break to the monster's bow or the giant's axe. She stands tall and firm, weapons in hand as she stares into the abyss of death's bleak eyes. She will not allow her fate, nor the world's, to be bent by cruel gods. This is her land. This is Eitr.
The music, so bleak, grabbed me when I first saw Eitr's trailer. An action RPG in the vein of Dark Souls and Diablo, Eitr requires that its Shield Maiden make her way through the nine tainted worlds of Norse mythology and get rid of the creatures that now roam there. The developer, Derity, has released little more than some plot snippets and many striking animations to show the Shield Maiden in action, demonstrating the game has a heavy focus on defense in its isometric gameplay. You're fighting many large, dangerous things in Eitr, and that shield of yours will be very important in keeping you alive. An experience system and some magical attacks may help, but neither of those is better than just not getting hit.
There is some really nice pixel artwork in the trailer, with some beautifully creepy monsters and smooth animations for the Shield Maiden's attacks. It's great that she has some fluid attacks, as fate is definitely not on her side, judging from the music and visual tone of the trailer. Anyone looking for a challenge will find it here as the game moves toward its release in 2016, where I'll be waiting, excited to have my shield broken by these gorgeous monstrosities.
