Dungeon crawling games have always been a staple in my gaming lineup. Most recently I've found myself lost in the labyrinths of Legend of Grimrock, which is a game that does a fantastic job of providing a classic dungeon crawling experience with a modern twist. Ruzar - The Life Stone is a new contender in the genre that has just released onto Steam Early Access, and attempts to provide a challenging experience that causes fond memories of your past dungeon conquests to resurface.

First-person dungeon crawling games seemed to die out for a while. There was a time when top-down, isometric, and third-person games ruled the genre, and it was extremely rare to come across something different. With the release of games like Grimrock, it was proven that we all still enjoy an immersive and challenging dungeon crawling experience.

Ruzar - The Life Stone can be simply described as a first-person dungeon crawler. Walk your way through various maze-like dungeons as you attempt to collect loot, defeat monsters, and complete quests. True to the dungeon crawlers of the past, the dungeons are extremely difficult to navigate, and there are many secrets to be found by those with a keen attention to detail.

The game begins with a character creation, allowing you to choose from various portraits to determine what your character will look like. You are also given 28 stat points to place in various stats such as strength, intelligence, and agility. Allocating these points is very important, as attempting to build a character that is practical and powerful will ensure that you are able to stand a chance against the powerful enemies you'll be facing.

Navigating your way through the dungeons is simple. You can move forward or backwards, and turn left or right to look at walls and other surfaces. Movement takes place in a grid, meaning that each time you move forward, you move one grid space. Ensuring that you're rotating your view to see the dungeon from all angles is a great way to make sure that you don't miss any secrets along your journey.

Combat takes place in real-time. When you come across an enemy, clicking on your weapon icon will allow you to perform an attack, which is typically on a short cooldown. You will also be able to use any special skills or abilities that you have access to during battle. Encounters can often be very difficult, and it is sometimes a valid option to move around on the battlefield to get a better angle on your opponent.

Every so often, you'll come across camps. These camps will act as hubs for you to rest in during your adventure. You'll be able to buy and sell items, store items for later use, speak to NPCs, and receive and turn in quests. Ensuring that you're gathering all of the goodies in the dungeon will allow you to purchase powerful armor and weaponry from the shops, which will give you a good advantage in combat with the more difficult enemies.

Leveling up in Ruzar is handled much like it is in any other RPG. You gain various skill points and abilities each time you level up, which you can allocate to make your character more powerful. The current level cap for the game is 50, so there is plenty of progression available to keep you busy for quite a while.

Ruzar - The Life Stone is currently available on Steam Early Access, and according to the developers has about 2 hours of gameplay at this time. There are, of course, plans to add much more content to the game to create a more rich and in-depth dungeon crawling experience.
