Of all the things video games are ideally suited for, horror is almost assuredly up near the top. The combination of interactivity with immersive aesthetics both visual and aural means that the medium is uniquely capable of creating and maintaining the kind of atmosphere horror relies on to an outstanding level. Small games can have a powerful impact and we've seen this before many times. Distraint is a small title from Jesse Makkonen, developer of Silence of the Sleep, which is scheduled for release on Halloween. Makkonen has just launched a Greenlight campaign to get the game on Steam in time for its planned release.
The game, intended on being a roughly two-hour narrative experience like a horror novel, is about a man named Price who is attempting to become a partner at a prestigious company. To do so, he claims property from an elderly woman, and in doing so, things begin to spiral downward for him.
Featuring a visual style that I can certainly say is unique, Distraint has a very dark, mournful look to it. Its characters are well drawn but their odd proportions and movements give the game an unnatural, almost grotesque feel. The sounds are clear and feel like they envelop you, and the music too is ominous. The game's aesthetic is perpetually foreboding and I hope it can be maintained throughout the entire game.
The side scrolling narrative game will use a minimalist interface to keep the focus on its story. Your primary goals in the game will be using your lantern to light your path and solve puzzles as you progress through Price's tale of remorse. Another point Makkonen wants to stress is that since the game will be short in length, the price too will be rather low, though he has not mentioned any specific price as of yet.
Halloween is of course the ideal time to launch a horror work of any sort, and this quick project from Makkonen is no different. A short narrative experience is a great way to spend an evening during the spooky season, and I do look forward to seeing how this plays out. Its interesting aesthetic alone pulls me to want to play Distraint, and if it lives up to its promise, I imagine lots of horror fans will be ready to see what the story of Price is all about.
