Halloween party ideas 2015

I'm not usually keen on covering games that are looking for funding on Kickstarter. Typically, I like to focus on those that are actually playable at this time and can be purchased and enjoyed immediately by those who are interested. However, every so often an interesting title pops onto my radar that I feel definitely deserves a bit of extra attention. Satellite Rush is one such title. Satellite Rush is a sci-fi roguelike, and is described as a sort of cross between The Binding of Isaac and Super Smash TV.

Satellite Rush initially caught my attention because I found the idea of being used as a sort of entertainment object for an alien audience quite amusing. The game featured a simple, yet charming, art style that was both colorful and interesting enough to draw my attention immediately upon setting my eyes on a screenshot. As a fan of The Binding of Isaac, I just had to see if the game could live up to its comparison with the series.

The story of Satellite Rush puts you in the shoes of Egomonkey, who has been abducted by aliens after he was chosen as the prime member of his race, and given the silly codename. After his abduction, Egomonkey was thrown into the arena known as Satellite Moebius, which is the venue for a gladiatorial-like show where abductees are pitted against various beasts for the entertainment of the extraterrestrials.

Satellite Rush is a very simple game, in terms of its controls. The WASD keys move you, while the arrow keys shoot. It is basically a twin-stick shooter, which is where the comparisons to The Binding of Isaac come from. Also, the random generation of the rooms behave a lot like Isaac's, meaning that you'll move from one room to the next, however with Satellite Rush it seems that you no longer have access to previous rooms and must continue to make your way forward. It was unclear whether or not there would be branching paths from my time with the demo, but it could definitely be that I just wasn't good enough to get far enough to see them.

The interesting twist of Satellite Rush is the bar at the top of the screen which shows how excited your audience is. The more enemies you kill, the more the bar rises. However, spend too much time hiding from enemies and the bar will go down, which means you must constantly be on the prowl to destroy as many enemies as possible in as little time as possible. If the bar reaches the "reward" section, audience members will randomly toss you weapons and power-ups to assist you in your quest.

The ability to be given random weapons at any time really gave the game a good sense of tension and satisfaction when you are able to get your favorite gun. I quickly fell in love with the shotgun, which was just tearing through enemies like they were nothing. However, the repeater and rocket launcher were also fantastic, and each weapon really does a good job of distinguishing itself from the others.

Enemies feature many different abilities, such as a charge, the ability to break into smaller versions of themselves, and the ability to fire tons of projectiles. When an enemy is firing projectiles at you, the game even takes on a hint of a bullet-hell feel, which makes it really hectic and enjoyable. Dodging through projectiles as you're trying to finish off the last enemies in a room is extremely thrilling, and never stopped being so.

Satellite Rush is looking like it is going to be a fantastic game. With some more variety, unlockables, and more characters to choose from, I can easily see it rising up as a direct competitor to Isaac. Currently, the game is seeking funding through Kickstarter (you can also find the demo here), so if you are interested, head over there and consider leaving a contribution. It has already passed through Steam Greenlight, so expect to see a release sometime in the future!
