When I first came across Bounty Train a month or so back, I was immediately reminded of my time with FTL. While the comparisons between the two games are easy to make, there is more than enough to set the games apart other than the clear thematic differences. I'll admit to never having been much of a fan of the Train Simulator games, or even a fan of trains in general, but Bounty Train drew me in with accessible controls and a surprising amount of depth.

Recently released into Early Access, Bounty Train has already been met with a fairly positive response from the community. Featuring frantic real-time combat that often forces you to multitask as you move your crew members, put out fires, feed coal into the train, and take control of the speed of the train, the game manages to provide a really challenging and entertaining combat experience, which I must admit was unexpected. Much like FTL, you're constantly moving your crew, altering the speed of your train, and assuring that everyone on your train will be kept safe, all while ensuring the train itself is taking as little damage as possible.

In terms of its non-combat sequences, Bounty Train provides some decent depth. As you travel from town to town, you'll meet various individuals, some of which will have missions for you to complete in order to earn experience and cash. On top of these quest-givers, you'll also run into potential passengers and people who are looking to join your crew for the right price. Ensuring that you have a balanced crew is extremely important if you're looking to be effective in combat. One of my favorite parts of the game is the ability to purchase goods to trade between stations. This brings me back to Mount & Blade, as I recall purchasing goods in one town only to sell them at a much higher price somewhere else. Trading has always been a really entertaining feature in games, in my opinion, and it's nice to see it implemented successfully in Bounty Train.

Bounty Train can now be purchased on Steam Early Access for $24.99.
