After 7 years since the award winning Rocketbirds Revolution! blasted it's way through the indie scene and 3 years since the enhanced Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken (our indie game pick) made it's way to the PS Vita, it's time to finally bring in bigger birds and bigger guns.
Rocketbirds 2: Evolution picks off right where the previous game ended, following the adventures of the Hardboiled Chicken. The evil megalomaniacal despot Putzki is somehow back from the dead and its up to you to stop him again. Rocketbirds 2: Evolution introduces a single player campaign, a co-op rescue mode, PVP capabilities, improved controls and tonnes of unlockables.
The levels in the single player mode are designed to be non-linear, similar to the Castlevania and Metroid games, with hidden paths, locked doors, areas with specific objectives, and puzzled to be solved. Over the course of the game you will be introduced to new mechanics and weapons. To access some areas, you might need to carry a bomb and blow it up next to a cracked wall. There is also a pretty cool item called the phone jammer where you can mind control your unsuspecting prey to open locked doors for you. Your weapons cover the standard range of guns (pistols, rifles, shotguns, etc.), each of which are extremely fun to fire.
My personal favorite mode is rescue where you can play with up to four players locally or online to take part in rescue missions, to save one of the game's random characters. Once you've saved a character, it joins your team out of thanks and is selectable for your next mission. There is also a "hidden feature" of sorts, where you can stack up the players into a gun-blazing tower of birds, which makes for a lot of good laughs. The rescue mode also supports a cross saving feature, where any progress made by any player is linked to their PSN account. So if you have a friend who as a copy of the game and you want to play locally, you can import their save data through PSN and bring over all of their unlocked weapons and characters.
The controls are extremely fluid and the I love the art direction. Watching birds shooting each other and cracking bird pun jokes still holds up. If you're thinking of letting your kids play this game, there is also a no-blood feature so you can safely play co-op with them. The game also features music from New World Revolution, which gives it a more robust sound.
