The most impressive thing about Milkstone Studios' Pharonic is its simplicity. There's no metagame, no builds or deep strategies you need to follow. Pick up the controller, hack and slay your way through ancient Egypt, that's it. And that's really good.

The game plays like a side-scrolling Dark Souls, with tense one on one fights that involve a lot of dodging, parrying, and blocking. Pharaonic can be pretty unforgiving, as getting hit removes a big chunk of your health bar, and the way to the next save point is usually a long one. But then, fights are incredibly satisfying, and getting better at stabbing other people always feels like a good use of your time, right?

It's a pretty tough, but rewarding game, and it's good to see an Egyptian setting used in an action game. The Steam version of Pharaonic has been out for a while; new PS4 and Wii U ports have just been released.

Pharaonic is available for $15.99 on Steam, the (European) Wii U eshop, and the PSN store. For more information on the game and developer Milkstone Studios, you can head to their website or follow them on Twitter.
