Halloween party ideas 2015

5 days, 345.000 visitors, and too many new and interesting games to count - that's Gamescom for you. Here are a couple of games that caught my attention, with more to follow in the coming days.

DimensionDrive-1.jpg
Dimension Drive (2Awesome Studio, 2017)
Dimension Drive is a dual-battlefield vertical shoot'em up. Essentially, you're single-handedly fighting two shoot'em ups side-by-side, zipping between screens and not trying to accidentally warp into a wall or something. It's a neat concept for a single-player title, but it truly shines during co-op play. The game's development has been somewhat troubled, to say the least, but it looks and plays great by now.

Haimrik (Below the Game, 2017)
Right at the top on the list of things you should probably not do is "sign weird demonic books with your own blood." But that's exactly what Haimrik, a young scribe and a bumbling fool to boot, does in this action-adventure puzzle game. There's text on the screen, and you can interact with it and actually use it to change reality, which is pretty innovative and allows for some interesting situations. Monsters blocking your way? Go back to the part of the text that says "sword" and show 'em who's boos! It's also over-the-top silly, unnecessary gory, and pretty strange overall. Sounds like a great time to me.

Lantern-1.jpg
Lantern (Storm In A Teacup, Q4 2016)
Promising an entirely non-violent and relaxing experience, Lantern looks spectacular. Be the wind and guide a sky lantern to spread love and color throughout the world. That's apparently all there is to it, but that sounds like a wonderful thing to me. This game seems to be the perfect showcase for VR support as well, that's why the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive will be supported, even if they're not needed to enjoy Lantern.

subsiege-1.jpg
Subsiege (Icebird Studios, 2017)
Featuring fast-paced, intense 12 player matches, Subsiege tries to combine traditional RTS and MOBA gameplay. The developers certainly have a few good ideas, such as the futuristic underwater setting and oxygen as a resource - once you run out, the match ends for you. This should serve as a neat way to limit each match and prevent the game from dragging on for too long, which is the single-most annoying aspect of every type of MOBA game for me. There's no base building, but more of a traditional tech tree that has you spending resources for research. The game will probably inhabit a pretty small niche between two huge genres, and I hope it will be able to attract the needed number of players for its huge matches. In any case, it looks promising so far.

ScrapGardenTDB-1.jpg
Scrap Garden - The Day Before (Flazm, September 2016)
We covered little Canny's adventures a few months ago when Scrap Garden was released. Since then, developers Flazm have been busy working on a prequel that leads up to the events in Scrap Garden and will be released absolutely free of charge. Some of the original's rougher edges such as limited camera controls and puzzles that seemed to easy have definitely been smoothed out and if you're in the mood for some more kid-friendly platforming, Scrap Garden - The Day Before will deliver.

SolsticeChronicles-1.jpg
Solstice Chronicles (Ironward, Q1 2017)
Last year's The Red Solstice was a tough-as-nails squad strategy game that was as hard to get into as it was rewarding when you finally did. With their next title, a twin-stick shooter for one or two players, Ironward want to ease you into the game a little more as you defend the last remaining Mars colonies from creepy crawly alien scum again. But there's a twist! Your actions actually determine the enemies' spawn rate, making tactical gameplay not just important, but absolutely necessary. The game's pacing felt somewhat slow... until there were aliens coming at you from every direction, that is. Solstice Chronicles is definitely one to watch.
