The developers of Starr Mazer (a very cool shmup/adventure game hybrid in development), Imago Softworks, were only trying to make a demo for that game when they somewhat accidentally created an awesome standalone shmup. With the help of Pixeljam games, they have released Starr Mazer: DSP, a roguelike shmup where, instead of lives, you take a handful of pilots with varied abilities to face an oncoming alien threat.

Starr Mazer: DSP starts players off with a handful of pilots, each with their own weapons and super attacks, and asks you to choose which of them to bring into combat. Your squadron will need to survive nine stages and three bosses to see the game's end, and if a preferred pilot goes down, that's the end for them. You'll need to be very careful with your pilots while playing through this game.

Their death isn't a total loss, though. Using the score (skore) from failed runs, as well as some item pickups, you can purchase new groups of pilots, possibly unlocking legendary fighters based on the Starr Mazer game (and some of its dev team). So, get your crew together and get ready to teach those pacifist aliens what happens when they come back to attack the people who attacked them to begin with!

Starr Mazer: DSP is available for $8.99 on Steam Early Access and the Playism Store. For more information on the game and developers Imagos Softworks and Pixeljam, you can head to the game's site, follow Imagos Softworks on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter, and follow Pixeljam on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.
