Halloween party ideas 2015

Calling Blackfaun an action RPG doesn't quite do it justice, even if it looks the part. Instead, the game feels more akin to fast-paced twin stick shooters, with an added roguelikey layer of gameplay-changing item drops. Playing as the faun Eri, you're on a quest to prove your worth as heiress to the crown, only to be troubled by your brother, Pan, along the way. Fight your way through procedurally generated dungeons, beat a bunch of monstrous bosses, and work on those dodging skills, as you're certainly going to need them.

There are two things here that may draw you in. The gameplay can be quite intense. Being chased by a bunch of monsters at once and dodging through projectiles while getting your own hits to land at the same time is exhilarating at the best of times (and slightly chaotic and messy at the worst). Depending on the weapon you have equipped, you need to get up close and personal in order to do some damage, so it's a lot of hitting and running. Blackfaun starts off relatively tame, but later levels pose quite the challenge. If you bite the dust - and that's the other thing that keeps me coming back for more - it wasn't all for nothing, as you may get to keep some of the stuff you collected and use it in future runs from the get-go. There are tons of different items, all of which change the way the game plays and feels. This is pretty nice and allows you to customize your character to your liking. Oh, and there's a second character to be unlocked as well, but I don't think I'll get there anytime soon.

In any case, Blackfaun has won me over with its fast-paced gameplay and motivating unlock system. It sits kind of awkwardly at the intersection of twin stick shooter and traditional action RPG, but if you give it a spin, it may just draw you in. The game can be purchased from Steam for $14.99. For more information, visit the game's website or follow developers Wild Guess Software on Twitter.
