You’ve recently died, and your brain is struggling to comprehend what’s happened. Images, memories, and music burst through the haze, carrying you through adventures and visions in The Endless Empty.
The time post-death is a surreal one for the game’s protagonist. Your mind tries to put together a coherent reality in your new existence, but the physical vessel for thought is crumbling and misfiring. Who you are is lost. Your friends and loved ones are lost. Still, some distorted memories of songs and important life moments are still bursting to life in what remains of you, and you’re free to explore those mental places as you head into your new existence.
The Endless Empty takes the player through five acts of their post-life existence, each with their own visual style and themes. You’ll be tasked with making choices as you wander the colorful lands and deal with the cruel manifestations that mean to give you a hard time. Depending on how you make your way through them, you’ll reach one of several different conclusions for your journey. Assuming you don’t get thumped by one of these monstrous visions in turn-based combat, that is.
Much of the game is open to interpretation, allowing you find your own meanings in the game’s look at death and the afterlife. There’s much to think on now that you don’t have to worry about that physical body and all of the trappings of your life any more, and The Endless Empty aims to have you spend a few quiet hours in contemplation of this time that waits for us all.
The Endless Empty is available now on Itch.io, RPGMaker.net, and Steam.
