Shmup ‘HORGIHUGH’ Guides Animal Pilots Through Tight Bullet Arrays - [INDIEGAMING]

A corgi-husky mutt in a biplane is the only thing that can stop the alien Gozarean attack. Luckily, HORGIHUGH‘s hero is a persistent pup with a steady hand.

For a game about a dog flying planes, HORGIHUGH‘s plot is a bit dark and complex. It involves a murder sparking a war, alien gemstones calling intergalactic forces, a world at peace getting rocked by this force, and puppy pilots with conflicting feelings about the harm their actions bring. There’s a lot to it, although you might be forgiven for not noticing that as you weave through streams of bullets and fight off giant robots.

You’ve got a handful of tools to do it with, though. The game offers over a dozen different weapons you can use based on combat needs and what you feel most comfortable using. You can also unlock handy upgrades from a few of your other animal buddies if they happen to float your way during a stage. If that’s not enough, you can call upon an AI friend to double your firepower (and who avoids damage much more easily than you might). It’s a surprising amount of weaponry and equipment for a world that’s supposedly at peace.

While it aims for solid action with a great variety of weaponry, it’s HORGIHUGH‘s innate sense of humor that seems to make everything click. A dog in a biplane fighting off all of these serious-looking enemies through seas of flame, all while going through the aftermath of the game’s sobering story, adds an element of ridiculousness that just adds to the fun of this shmup.
